How good were 1930's Arsenal compared to 2008 Arsenal?
My late great-uncle, who regularly attended Highbury from 1931-2006, and Ashburton Grove a few times too, gave a surprising answer when I asked him.
He said only Ted Drake would make the starting eleven today.
Why I asked?
He answered: Drake was strong, about 6 foot 2, and worked hard. He gave the defenders a nightmare with his movement.
So I asked, if the reasons that today's players would keep the 1930's ones out of the team are because today's players are - bigger, faster, stronger, better trained, better fed, better medical care, better training facilities etc?
He said No.
Simply, it is because today they are better.
More skillful.
Better players all round.
That surprised me.
Here's a 1930's Arsenal clip keep us all going during international week.

Conclusive proof that the old boys could certainly hold their own in today's game.

i think modern players are better than 30's players but corrently someone hasn't the heart and love for the team...i think to Joe Shaw before a player and then part of medicals, he spends 44 years in the club, pat rice is now-following, herbie roberts, wilf copping, joe hulme, tom parker, alex james, jack crayston, jack lambert i guess they always will be part of arsenal every time, they loved the club...

taking out the speed element of today's game i feel that, jamesb bastin and maybe haplegood (excuse the spelling) would not embarrass themselves.QuartzGooner wrote:How good were 1930's Arsenal compared to 2008 Arsenal?
