Official

Wenger in press conference.

Refuses to be drawn on why he stripped Gallas of captaincy.

Refuses to say if he made mistake by making Gallas captain.

Gallas to play vs Kiev.

Sweet.

Congratulations Cesc.

First time I've agreed with a captaincy appointment since PV4.

Am I alone in thinking Cesc could do without this burden at present?

Could be a way of keeping him at Arsenal

No you are not!

He is in terrible form and needs to focus on improving his game.

And giving someone captaincy will not keep them at a club, Henry was proof of that.

Your not alone Charlie. To me, this will either be a stroke of genius & it gives the club a lift or it will force him out in the summer.

Heres hoping for the former :?

IMO it's not about keeping him at the club. He's the player constantly talking to the rest of the team, and he leads the team on the pitch. He is in the middle of the pitch so is easily accessible to every other player, plus he's one of about 3 players actually guaranteed a game most weeks. I'd say the fact that I can name our best starting XI from 10 years ago more easily than I can now is more of a problem.

Add to the equation that Gallas and Cesc are not meant to see eye to eye and there could be interesting times ahead?

i also concur, but i feel cesc has more respect and the players will beleive in him more, so i actually think it is a good appointment, altho his form has been poor, but thats more to do with his position not being os far forward. he's not the same mentally this year and he is still tired from the summer!!

...but at the same time...Cesc could thrive on the new responsibility...he will know that now he just has to pull himself out of this slump in form...the whole of the squad will now look to him for inspiration and a new way forward...Cesc may just step up to the plate and this could the beginning of him cementing his place as a true Arsenal Legend...we can only hope....

my deeper concern is WG playing tomorrow...will he score an own goal like he threatened at Chelski...?...sorry but I just had to throw that cat among the pidgeons...!

Bad decision at the moment IMO. Long term it is correct but I don't think Cesc needs this right now. He is suffering from a dip in form as a result of having to do two jobs in the middle.
The only good point is that Cesc is known to want some fresh blood coming in. He was outspoken in the summer about one or two transfers that he would like to see and as captain would have more influence with AW. He is also a real Arsenal man in the way he conducts himself. He knows the 'Arsenal Way' of doing things and I think he can command the respect of the other players (one or two aside).

I'd like to have seen Almunia keep it for the remainder of this season and for Cesc to start with a clean sheet in the summer.
At least he never gave it to that crunt Adebayor. :barscarf: :barscarf:
