Jermaine Defoe Anybody ?
With the spuds signing Bent it dont look like Defoe will hang around for long with Keane , Bent and Berbatov in front of him now . With just about everybody from Torres, Forlan , Anelka , Martins and Michael Owen's names floating around to leave their clubs. Do you think Defoe would be a good option for us?

Sorry chaps but I think you are letting your anti-Spurs bias get in the way.
I have always rated him and think Defoe would be a fabulous signing for Arsenal. Playing-style wise, he is the nearest you will ever get to another Ian Wright - but without the inflammable temperament.
Defoe is an out and out goal-scorer who also has decent enough ability to link up with other players outside the box. Plus, the man is a life-long Arsenal fan!!!
Alas, I can't see it happening as Wenger could have signed him from West Ham for £7m yet didn't want to pay it - even though he rated Defoe highly. I would imagine that his price tag would now be nearer £10m and therefore even more prohibitive to Wenger. Plus the fact that Spurs would be reluctant to sell him to us for the same price as maybe to another club and it looks a no-goer.

And thankfully, this country being a democracy, you are intitled to that opinion. Just as I am intitled to think that opinion is a load of Ballacks!!
I couldn't care less if he was pimping ladies while selling hard drugs on the side!
The thing that matters is his ability and whether or not he could do a good job for us! I would have more respect for your opinion if it was based soley on that, rather than some perception you may have of him as a person.
By the way, I take it you have never meet Defoe in person, right? So how would you know what he is like?

Nope never met him and why would I want too?
I like players you can look up to! Proper legends like Bergkamp and Brady had something decent about them. Maybe those values dont count on the footbalkl pitch true but to me he is not the kind of character I want at our club.
On strictly football resons his ability is not all that! Like I said previous hes made to look better than he is by the lack of decent English centre forwards. If he really was mustard would he be sitting on the bench for the scum and would piehead Jol have paid that amount of money for a replacement English centre forward of the same type?

Don't rate Defoe as a player? That's fair enough.
As for the 'proper legends' line, that's a cop-out. Liam Brady was my hero. Yet he left the club when he felt he wasn't being appreciated enough money wise.
And as my mate DB10GOONER testified in another thread , when he had an opportunity to meet Liam Brady in person he came away very disappointed due to Brady's attitude. It didn't stop DB10GOONER appreciating him as a player though.
The fact is, there are proportionally the same percentage of arseholes and wankers in football and other sports as there is in society as a whole. Unless we have a personal experience/confrontation with one of them, we can and should only judge them on what they do on the field!

Its not a cop out at all!
Sorry I just thin k we can do better than him end of story!
Like you said we should only judge him on footballing ability alone yet thats the one thing you did not have a reply about?
Its certainly not an anti spurs bias thing for me as I thought the world of Sol and would gladly welcome Berbatov!

I will try and be charitable. I can't believe that you're really that stupid, so I'll assume you're on a wind-up!!

As for yourself, so you finally agree that we should judge him on his footballing ability. That therefore makes most of what you wrote earlier -regarding Defoe's supposed character - irrelevant, as well as being utter bollocks, as you admit you've never met him!
I explained in my last post that if you don't rate him as a player that's fine. We can agree to differ. Now if your previous couple of posts had simply said what your first and last one did, namely that you don't think Defoe is the answer, then we wouldn't be having this (written)conversation. The thing I took umbrage at was the personal insults you used to justify your opinions.
On the bright side, we can agree on at least one thing. Berbatov would be fantastic at Arsenal. Trouble is, it will never happen.
