Wenger - Why I won't buy a central midfielder

When the transfer window closes on Monday, we will know once and for all whether Arsenal have landed Andrei Arshavin.

But while the 'will he, won't he?' saga approaches its conclusion, some Arsenal fans are wondering why Arsène Wenger's major January target is a Russian playmaker. After all, he intimated last summer that a central midfielder - or even a centre back - was top of his shopping list.

Wenger was asked about his recruitment priorities at Friday's press conference and had a firm answer for those who feel Arsenal need more 'tough guys' in the spine of their team. The Frenchman insists that it is difficult to improve on his current batch of midfielders and defenders.

"I believe that we have the needed quality in the middle because [Abou] Diaby develops very well and I think that [Alex] Song develops well," said Wenger. "And I don't believe that Denilson gets the credit that he deserves at the moment.

"At the back you can see the quality of players we have like [William] Gallas and Kolo [Toure] and [Johan] Djourou, they are in their national teams and to find better players is not easy.

"I agree that people always want better players but many clubs when they want better players come to see us so that means our players are good. For example Milan wanted [Philippe] Senderos, Senderos is 22 and Milan have scouts everywhere, so that's why I believe we have the needed quality.

"Djourou is 21 and you think he will be better and we have to give him a chance."

So why is Wenger after Arshavin? "What is very important at a big club is that you need a creative unit that you can interchange," explained Wenger. "They are the players that are most difficult to find."

uefa cup here we come

while i think wenger has been talking shite, for most of the season, i do agree what he said about denilson. i also think that denilson has been underrated. i wont for 1 min say, hes the bees knees, when hes clearly not, but hes play 90% of the time and has done an ok job. 3 goals and 5 assists in the league, r not bad. sure, hes not cesc, nor never will be, but id pick him ahead of our 2 donkies (song + eboue) anyday of the week. he certianly wouldnt make our strongest 11, but hes def worth a place on the bench. i think his good atributes, outweigh the bad, and in the long term he cant only get better, unlike the 2 donkies.

denilson could be a decent player if he was atleast a big more agressive

we need to chain him up and force him to watch 'emmanuel eboue's home videos' while being fed raw steak (ala clockwork orange

Like I have said, I'll hold fire until June but if he's still spouting this dross - and I can't see how he can do otherwise ! - then he's got to go - simple as.

i think denilson has something but is far from being ready. he should not be in the first team of a squad looking to compete with the title. eboue and song can fuck off. no time for either of them. eboue was a decent RB but its time to move on.

Denilson is in the same boat as many of our midfielders in that he needs a PV4 type alongside him to give him the chance to develop. Granted he aint no cesc but compared to song he is a fcuking pele  I said all along that wenger has until the end of the current transfer window (based on the assumption that he has funds to spend) to prove that his plans have not derailed but as things stand I am more convinced than ever that the man has lost his way and may not a total break or a fresh challenge cos he and this team are only going in one direction......downwards

He develops well...obviously Mr Wenger is referring to Song's love of photography rather than his footballing abilities
