National Flags

Post by McGunner »

Did anybody catch the small artical in the NOTW this sunday. A blackburn fan was complaining that his St george's cross flag was taken by a steward. Explination given by steward was, no flags bearing nationality was allowed to be displayed inside the stadium, due to possibly being seen as racist. This was too backed up by the clubs spokes person!!!

What do you feel about displaying national flags, and the racisum connected to them?

I think it is outrageous that the George's cross is banned. I think acts like this stir up more nationalism than they subdue

It is not racist to display the national flag.

I do agree with Arsenal who banned the flags though, as they were put into a tough situation with a Cypriot rivalry that might have escalated into violence, especially considering we have a lot of Cypriot fans.

It is time to relax the ban though, and let flags be displayed.

The thing is, I cannot understand why a national flag would be displayed at a club game in many circumstances, unless it was one with writing on such as "Barnet Gooners" etc of the type that are common.

I suppose fans might wave a Croatia flag for Eduardo etc.

In many other circumstances the flag is used as a political message, and then it gets out of hand.

I would prefer to see more Arsenal flags at games, or banners with funny messages related to incidents, of the type you get at Cup Finals.

Next time we play Hull maybe we can turn up with banners like this?

The flag did get hijacked by the far right during the 1970's and 1980's...but it is back where it belongs now as the English flag.

National flag my friends is carried in Wars or when we celebrate something, i dont even agree with celebration, people carry the flag anywhere and for me in 90% of the places the flag does not belong. The national flag is something we die for.
As an everyday flag i carry most of time Arsenal flag. in celebrations American, Kosovan and Albanian, even i dont agrre i have to because people around me will have that spuds look at me.

I asked to bring a flag at the Emirates, they told me it shouldn't be a national flag (whatever the nation).
But I was allowed to bring this flag:

:?

If National flags are banned, then isn't the Turkish Cypriot flag (not officially recognised as a National flag by ANYONE outside Turkey) still allowed?

Nice one digger, this was the flag that wound all the Greeks up. The guy only had it up when we 1st moved to the Grove, to show his mate in the opposite quadrant where he was sitting!
Once he started getting abuse about it...said F**k it! i'll keep it there every game...until they made such a stink about it to Arsenal....like you said sledgehammer & nut come to mind.
