Too skinny?

Post by Captain Fabregas »

I'd snap her in half   8)

THIS alarming picture shows painfully thin Miss Universe contestant Stephanie Naumoska, 19.

The snap of the leggy Sydney model, taken during the Australian finals, has sparked fierce debate down under, with critics calling Stephanie ‘skin and bone.’

Despite Miss Universe organisers saying the competition promotes "healthy, proportioned, bodies," experts argue that the pageant promotes an unhealthy body image.

The Australian Medical Association said: "The most unhealthy part about it is the image it is showing other young women. They may view this as normal, when clearly it's not."

Outrage

Docs have called for the competition to impose a minimum BMI of 20. A BMI of 18 or less is officially underweight, and the World Health Organisation classifies a BMI of 16 or less as severe thinness. Stephanie has a BMI of just 14.7.

The tall brunette denies she has an eating disorder, while competition organisers claim her Macedonian heritage is to blame for her waif-like figure, as people from that region are naturally thin.

Experts dismissed this claim, saying there is no such thing as a Macedonian body type.

Danger

Sun doc Carol Cooper says: "Stephanie is painfully thin. Her ribs are visible and she doesn’t seem to have an ounce of fat or muscle, so she isn’t in good shape whatever she may claim.

"Being underweight affects the body’s hormones and general metabolism. Fertility can be affected, and serious dangers include muscle wasting, heart problems, and osteoporosis. Sadly, starving to death is not unknown.

Carol adds: "Many anorexics manage to conceal their disorder by claiming they’ve just eaten elsewhere – or by eating the occasional almost normal meal and then vomiting or exercising vigorously. Some anorexics are obsessed with food and either hoard it, or enjoy cooking for others. Anorexics typically think they’re overweight, despite all the evidence to the contrary."
