Why are we so keen to 'Scapegoat' each other ?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Why are we so keen to 'Scapegoat' each other ?

Post by Rob »

I ask this in the light of 24 hours reflection on last nights dismal showing and what I have read here and elsewhere.

As I walked back to Finsbury Park Station last night amisdt the litter and gloom, I wondered what the reaction would be ?

The usual stuff - "Wenger Out" - "Wenger must stay" - "Addy Out !" - "RvP must stay" - and so on.

And by the time I got the 10.57 train I was pretty convinved that we would soon hear a chorous of "It was all OUR fault..." for whatever reason.

Sure enough, bang on target the posts arrived.

Let's examine this. We are terrible supporters and we don't sing enough.

Probably quite true. But if every Steward jumps on ever fan for standing up and the Club bans flags with national emblems - Yes I am aware they have just relented !! Well done AFC - and if there is a desire on the part of the Club to take the money but almost regret the presence of the man/woman who has parted with it, what do you expect ?

If our Club with it's 60,000 seats was 1/2 or 1/3 empty - like 'Boro or Blackburn - then fair enough.

If we never took our allocation for away tickets - (I believe we sell out every time) - then fair enough.

If we had failed to invest in Bonds for the old North Bank and it was not built - fair enough.

If we failed to make the transition from 38,500 Highnury to 60,100 Emirates - fair enough.

As for the - "You leave early and you aren't a true fan" - (heavy implication - "I am " ) "even though I don't go and therefore don't financially contribute and therefore don't, or seldom, pay these players vast wages but still feel inclined to bitch at those who do" kind of supporter - I am afraid my understanding falls short.

Watch the Real v Barca game ? 6 - 2 to Barca ! How many Real - (real ??) fans stayed to the end ??

How many Barca fans were there 8 years ago when Real stuffed them and the Barca fans waved handerkerchieves at the Nu Camp to demand the President quit ?

Must say - I have yet to see that in 45 years of following Arsenal.

Seen Newcastle recently ? Seen their rows of empty seats ? Liverpool fans booded the team off after a 0 - 0 this season which kept them top of the Prem.

My point is that we are no better and no worse than the others. Just the same. Perhaps less vocal. But more contributary - financially.

It's what the Club does or does not do with our money that matters. And if fans who pay wish to arrive late or go early, they have every right so to do. Just like every other fan elsehwhere.

If you think otherwise - force yourself to the front of the Season Ticket queue - it ain't hard. And stay to the bitter end. Just like some of us did on Tuesday night and clapped the Mancs off the pitch. :D

Disagree completely our support is among the worst in the premier league.

The facts are Chelsea, Liverpool and United fans wouldn't of had a mass exodus like we had yesterday.

We only come out on top with numbers.

When Chelsea first won the Prem' under Mourhinio, Utd cancelled their lap of honour after their last home game as the crowds had already departed to Torquay and Croydon and Singapore, feeling cheated.

That's a fact.

What does that tell you ?

One would expect for all the financial contribution you would get your full monies worth.

After all minium £47.00 for a ticket, plus the booking fee. Looks like some aren't quite feeling the pinch like others if you fuck off after 10 minutes.

All fans are pretty much the same but we are worse than most.

I was at the Chelsea game last year. And as much as i hate thier fans i have to give them credit for sticking by their side to FT. Anyone who was there would agree atleast 80% of their section was still full at the final whistle. Had it been at ours i gaurentee you it would've been around the 40% mark. That's the difference.

When have you ever seen Anfield half empty with 20 minutes left?

When we won the league at Old Trafford in 2002 United fans stayed to the end to appluad us of the pitch and were still supporting their team till the death. Wouldn't happen at ours.

Manwho fuck off early when they lose, they did when we beat them 1-0; Chelsea support nowadays is pathetic, mainly kids and need free flags whenever there's an important game on to get them 'supporting' the team; I've only been to Liverpool when we've lost, so I'm not sure.

Certain people on this forum slag our support off too easily. Like every teams' support there are weak parts, but we're not that bad. Last night was a strange, extreme, example.

Oh, and before you ask, I stayed till the end.

So what you are saying Tinny is this - if I understand you :-

Arsenal Football Club :-

Wonderful Manager

Woeful Fans with few exceptions (presumably you include yourself in the 'exceptions' category ?)

Promising team - albeit one that is yet to realise it's full potential.

Is that a fair summation ?

With regards to our fans I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle of what's already been said.

Rob makes a very valid point about the Liverpool and Newcastle fans this season, both self appointed best fans in the country. And having travelled to a fair number of premiership grounds I can't say I've been that impressed with many of them in terms of atmosphere.

However the amount of early leavers on Tuesday was embarrasing.

It was far from enjoyable to watch but you have to support your team good times and bad and acknowledge the players at the end of the game. We were beaten soundly over the two legs, but we have had a good run in the competition and it was a european cup semi final after all. It also shows class to acknowledge that United played very well, deserved to go through and applaud them also.

I'm presuming the comment above about Chelsea fans needing free flags to get a good atmosphere going was tongue in cheek...

impressive mate, well done!!!

I remember watching the Mancs do the same to us when we won the title there and thinking that showed true class as a fan, did a lot applaud them off??

Tuesday’s game is/was a one off.
I'm not talking about the regular 'leave early to beat the travel/to get home' brigade. I understand those that left early as it was a thought that had actually crossed my mind for the first time!!!

After the 2nd goal went in it was really game over. I believe a small few had left but there was still an hour to play.
Personally, I wanted the team to come out a show some pride as we were getting played off the park.
When the 3rd went in there was a mass exodus.

Tuesday showed the gulf and was humiliating to watch. I actually didn't know what to do myself as they're was still 20 minutes to play.

I understand way most left. The tie was beyond us and the indivial match score was going as well. That said you come to support your team and fight vocally.
Problem was the team just wasn't doing the same or responding. It was a heartless performance and getting beat so convincing hurt.

It's no different to when the Scousers beat the Mancs at OT. When the last (4th) goal when in I know it was stoppage time but the place was empty. Which make's us no different. And Chelsea....they don't even turn up to a small/mediocre team in the CL group stages!?!?!

Did you see the game against Liverpool when they lost 4-1? When Liverpool scored the 4th it was emptier than the Grove on Tuesday
