Wenger - We're not far away from Man United
Arsenal’s Champions League exit on Tuesday has been followed by a barrage of opinion – some optimistic, some realistic and much negative. At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Arsène Wenger had to contend with what he called “definite conclusionsâ€
Yes he's right; the distance between the two teams was not as wide as the two games measured as they should have won by a combined aggregate of 10 - 1 rather than 4 - 1.
Not one Arsenal player would displace his Man U counterpart and that includes the substitutes. How much wider does it have to get ?

Well, for what it's worth SteveO agree with him cos if I really thought that we were really as far away as that game suggested then I would be seriously worried, fact is they are a balanced team, the finished article - we aren't!
Those 2 goals absolutely killed us, knocked the stuffing out of us and totally changed the game, and you could see the Mancs realise the game was effectively over and sit back!

It is ironic that he says that the most difficult thing in the game today is putting yourself in a position where you have to chase and claims that the gap between us and manure is not so big when in reality we have been chasing them in the league since october/november and the gap is nowhere near being close. What he also "forgets" to consider in that summation is that they were miles better than us in the 1st leg also when he sent out his team to play negative football to try and negate them rather than put our own stamp on the game.
It is depressing to those of us that hoped that when we got shot of hill wood these embarrassing statements coming from the club would cease only to realise that wenger has picked up the torch and will carry on from where phw left off

But if they have the league practically in the bag by then (if they win tomorrow and next midweek) and rest players, how much pride can we restore if we get a result then ? Fact is that when it mattered most we were found wanting and then some and I am sure that, like the fans, the players will feel the same way

Agreed Percy, when we were all over the place at OT to concede that single goal I thought oh here we go, next week's goin to be a formality a non-event and we were lucky not get a tankin, but you could also see Fergie was worried that he hadn't put the tie to bed cos he is well aware of what we are capable of!
Fact is IMO far too many of our players under-performed and not just wankers like Greedy, Cesc had a couple of good games when he came back from injury and then disappeared again, constantly giving the ball away which is almost unheard of for him, we lost key players like Gallas and Clichy and Sagna who is playin as altho he is not fit!
I'll admit that we should've got someone like Vidic who would hardly break the bank and a we should break the bank if necessary to find a world class partner for Cesc with Song now at the level of decent back-up, but it doesn't help when we've long term injuries like Eduardo and Rosicky from an already small squad!

Augie are you forgetting that we have beaten them when it mattered this season, and listen we can go round in circles here fact is clubs like ManUre and the Chavs can afford to buy AND pay multiple players and then bench or offload at a loss the ones that don't make it which makes it far easier to maintain a challenge while rebuilding!augie wrote:But if they have the league practically in the bag by then (if they win tomorrow and next midweek) and rest players, how much pride can we restore if we get a result then ? Wenger has already done a pretty candid interview where he has admitted many mistakes but seriously where do you think we would be if we had the money at AF's disposal, and as I said people seem to get to caught up in transfer fees when it's the wages that are doin the damage as well!
Walcott's only 20 and is yet to realise his potential and he's already on 3M per year basic and it seems to be that today wages effectively double the original fee paid, and is the reason why we loan so many players out!
FFS Wenger shut the F**k up.Even the most blinkered Arsenal fan can see Man Utd are light years ahead of us.If the aggregate score had been 10-1 not one Gooner could complain.Sadly the faliure of Wenger to recognise this means next season is going to be reflection of this one. When our rivals will go out and strengthen we will buy a couple of 17 year olds,And the saying goes there is none so blind as he who will not see

Not much pride maybe, but if we can win our last 3 games and nick that 3rd spot it'll make a massive difference to our pre-season and probably how much money we spend in the summeraugie wrote:But if they have the league practically in the bag by then (if they win tomorrow and next midweek) and rest players, how much pride can we restore if we get a result then ? he is deluded and i think the question is now even if he had moeny he woudlnt have spend it so as far as concerned last straw

I guess finishing 4th would make qualifying for the CL that bit less certain, especially with the lack of seeding in the new qualifying format.Percy Dalton wrote:I really can't think why "nicking" third would affect our spending in the summer so drastically!
Why would coming third by a point change the transfer policy?
The all too apparent holes in the team would still remain the same.
And with the cautious approach of our board/Wenger it wouldn’t surprise me that much if they were reluctant to spend too big until the CL income was 100% secured, & as a result left trying to secure major deals until after the qualifiers, basically a week or so before the deadline shuts.

The concept of ‘speculate to accumulate’ seems to have been lost on Wenger. Maybe he bunked off the week they taught that during his economics degree!
