Name the centre back you want us to buy

Name the centre back you want us to buy

Post by hadareud »

There's been a lot of talk about us bringing in a centre back that's:

- experienced
- tough
- tall
- great in the air
- commanding and able to organise a defence
- quick
- technically sound
- the right age
- a leader
- amazing all around
- available

So, time to not only request and moan, but to give some names that actually have either all of the above attributes, or at least most of them.

My suggestion would be:

Giorgio Chiellini
- 24 years old
- 188cm tall
- nearly 200 games in Serie A
- 18 caps
- defender of the year in Italy last season
- quick
- good in the air

So basically, appears to have what it takes.

However - he's very unlikely to be available. He signed a new contract with Juventus last summer and they will be more than reluctant to let him move on. It would take a massive offer (15 million or above) and even then there's no guarantee they'd accept.

I'd be interested to see if someone comes up with a player that not only ticks all the boxes but is also available.

that's a good shout actually. He's a good player and definitely very experienced. 31 is also still acceptable for a centre half.

I do remember him saying that he didn't want to leave Germany a few years ago though, but maybe that's changed since.

Wenger voice:

"And don't forget, we also too have Senderos back in next season."

"No, I think we have the depth to cover us at the back, we are a little short in experience but the togetherness of our young players is fantastic."

"Remember these players are very young."

I said name the players, not moan about the lack of signing them

Honestly think Lescott would be a good shout. But it would probably take easily £12-15m for Everton to let him go.

That Zapata guy from Udinese that Gunner Dude reminded me about yesterday is supposed to be the bog’s dollocks. Never seen him play so I cant vouch for him but pretty much all the top Italian teams (who tend to know a thing or 2 about defending) seem to rate him highly. Anyone seen him play?

First & foremost though I want someone who’s a natural born defender & loves the art of defending! The way Baresi did, or Maldini, or countless other Italian defenders did/do.

Being able to play a bit or provide a goal threat at set-pieces etc is a bonus but let's just hope we've got our priorities straight. We wouldnt buy a striker cos he can help out defending set-pieces etc.

How about Westermann from Schalke?

Not seen much of him though, but sounds good from what I've heard. Defender that likes to grab important goals too. Might be a help at set pieces.

Exactly who I'd have. Wins everything in the box, has played for years in the Premier League. Top quality player who will get even better in the next few years.

Can't see Lescott happening but I'd hope he would sign for us.

I'd like to see an 18 year old african player with loads of potential, desire and hunger, he must also be able to play any where along the back, and be a good passer, would also help if he was a bit of a gamble, maybe just back from a long lay off, thus ensuring a bargain buy.

Zapata is a great player apparently.

There's a rumour that we tried to sign him last summer but Udinese turned down our offer (9.5 million allegedly).

There's going to be a bidding war for him this summer. Will be difficult to get him.

We missed the boat there, we should have signed him from Wolves when we had the chance :banghead: :banghead:

Do our scouts ever visit teams in this country and in the lower divisions?

Furthermore Tim Cahill and Phil Jagielka, someone at Everton in the scouting division is doing a great job, and David Moyes too.
