What with all the criticism of the team and the manager that has been simmering all season and recently somewhat boiled over, I think that maybe a small amount of perspective could do us good.
This is by no means a blind, AKB-style championing of Arsene and don't want it to come across as such. I am just as disappointed with our performance this season as the next Gooner and I definitely acknowledge that the manager must take his share of responsibility. He made a grave error in not pushing for the FA cup (which I think we could have won) and some of his tactical and positional decisions have been woeful.
The first point I'd like to make is that, entirely due to his own decisions, Mr Wenger faced this season with a sub-standard squad. A lot of people, myself included, doubted that we could achieve a top-four finish this season. It is, in my opinion, a credit to Arsene Wenger that we managed to finish fourth this season by a somewhat comfortable margin. Although a large part of this was down to Aston Villa's capitulation, we managed to put together a 21-game unbeaten run to capitalise on that. With the injuries and players that we had available in that time, I think that deserves credit.
Another major criticism of Wenger lately has been his lack of big name signings. But when Arsene listened to the fans and put pen to paper on a big name, big money signing, he got it right. Andrey Arshavin is one of the most inspired signings I have seen by our club and I have no doubt that our finishing fourth was largely down to him. He gave the team, the fans and out results a lift.
I believe that Arsene has contributed an enormous amount to this Club, and while he shouldn't be given a free pass because of that, I do think that he deserves the chance to turn things around. He has stated his intentions for the transfer period ahead and has shown a degree of realisation that his current squad is not good enough and I for one am definitely behind giving him one last chance to deliver. Feel free to disagree.
Why I don't want Arsene Wenger to leave this summer

I have criticised him alot this season, because he has not learned from the mistakes of the last 3 seasons IMO. But I always said I'd give him until May 2010 to bring this team good. I still will. I love the guy and what he did not only for Arsenal but for the game of English football too...SPUDMASHER wrote:I think most people, given the option, would want him to stay, buy some quality and win the league next year.
I just pray he starts to see what he's done wrong and corrects it this summer and this coming season.

For some reason I got thinking about the Real Madrid model where they dont appear to show any loyalty to their managers irrespective of the success level. I know alot is down to the election thing that they do, but I was curious to know how long they have been running the club like this, & whether or not , when the club forged it's reputation as a european powerhouse over previous decades, they still regularly changed the management then.
In our country continuity is seen 2 b the mantra ie AW,Fergie, Shankly- Paisley,Cloughie etc etc. But as Chelsea show, u can still be relatively successful the other way. Is it purely a question of deepest pockets?
Please enlighten me if you know the Real answer

Since Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 Real Madrid have won 3 Champions League"s and 5 La Liga titles. So they must be doing something right.Managers know when they take the job what they are letting themselves in foryourshighburylly wrote:For some reason I got thinking about the Real Madrid model where they dont appear to show any loyalty to their managers irrespective of the success level.
