Since when did the English start calling it 'soccer' ?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Since when did the English start calling it 'soccer' ?

Post by gunnerhead »

From Soccer AM to Soccer Saturday to the Arsenal Soccer School -- what's going on? I thought it was an American term because football is used to call their rugby-lite sport with pads and all.

I never get to watch those shows in Canada so I was a little surprised.

It's called Football (Soccer) over here.

I call it both, and use both names all the time with no reason at all for swapping them.

Ah well, they're interchangeable now, most people know what it means anyway.

Yeah we hate that word cos it's totally against tradition, and it's use suggests that Association Football is not the No.1 sport in the UK but it's use is probably creeping in because dare I say it, it probably sounds catchier or more modern and gives you more options when your tryin to think of a title for a new Saturday mornin show or XBox game!

I understand being PC but you only need to be PC if someone else might be offended by calling it football.

I don't know if it's more international 'now'. It's always been the biggest sport in the world.

It definitely is yank ***** though and it's annoying hearing the word soccer thrown around in your side of the world.

SOCCER COMES FROM THE WORD ASSOCIATION AND HAS BEEN IN USE LONG BEFORE THE AMERICANS STARTED CALLING IT THAT. INDEED, IT WAS ENGLISHMEN THAT FIRST COINED THE WORD IN THE LATE 19TH -EARLY 20TH CENTURY - NOT AMERICANS!!

IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD FOOTBALL IS BETTER KNOWN AS SOCCER. WE MAY NOT LIKE IT, BUT IT'S A FACT. WHO REALLY GIVES A TOSS ANYWAY? WE KNOW WHAT PEOPLE MEAN WHEN THEY USE THE TERM, AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.

IT'S JUST ANOTHER REASON FOR PEOPLE TO START AMERICA-BASHING FOR THE SAKE OF IT, IF YOU ASK ME!! :x

i know wot ur sayin but i give a toss!! Personally, i think the words 'foot' and 'ball' give it a away. to me, its means a great deal; just another example of the americanisation of the world, or (post) modernisation if u wanna call it that. wots wrong with america bashing anyway? the *word censored* started thinkin hey owned the world afet WW2. I mean look at what theyve done in irag and afghanistan - tryin to act like a big brother and ending up actin like a drunken cosuin tryin to kop a feel of his niece - sickening.

Soccer?? its far too instituionalised, but as our game is becoming this way, and thus the same teams win the same comps every year, what do u expect?
sorry, think im done now
