Ah, 1989.

The Berlin Wall came down, the Students protested in Tiannemen Square, the Cold War started to come to an end and in May in Liverpool, some bloke called Michael Thomas did something.

Can't quite remember what, though. :barscarf: :barscarf:

Since the wall has come down I've been to Dresden a few times. It really is a lovely city and it's a shame that it was hidden for so long.
Those of you with a knowledge of history will know that the allies flattened the place during the war as it was one of Germany's main weapons manufacturing sites. The allies did however leave the old part of the town completely untouched and there are many beautiful historic buildings there. The Zwinger is a seriously impressive palace.
The new town is fresh and vibrant as is the case across much of Germany. It makes you wonder who got the better deal after the war!
The only problem with going that far though is the language difficulties. Across much of Germany, English is widely known. In the old Eastern part though, the second language is Russian. Whilst there we discovered that virtually nobody spoke a word of English. Fortunately my wife has a good knowledge of German and I know quite a bit too (enough to get around anyway!). Without it, you're buggered out there.
Having said that, I'd recommend a trip there to anyone, especially just before Christmas. The market is one of the best I've ever been to.

I remember seeing people on the then ITV new as ten getting shot for trying to cross it. I remember watching it come down on the news, some dude with a sledgehammer sticks to mind.

Went to Berlin a couple of years ago purelly to see whats left of , and theres a decent chunk with some pretty good graffiti. Berlin is a wicked place and well worth spending a good week looking round. The pergamon museum is one of the best ive seen the world over.

It's interesting that, that piece of the wall that has graffiti 12th, is only graffited since the wall came down, as it's on the Eastern side. While the wall was up, it could only ever be graffited on the western side.

"I
I can remember
Standing
By the wall
And the guns
Shot above our heads
And we kissed
As though nothing could fall
And the shame
Was on the other side
Oh we can beat them
For ever and ever
Then we can be Heroes
Just for one day"

OK. Just, I worked for Sony and a guy called John who was a mega gooner, was seconded to the office there for a year. Fabulous office on one side of the Sony Centre in Potsdammer Platz.
