Lowest moment as a Gooner ?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Lowest moment as a Gooner ?

Post by SteveO 35 »

I'm sure it's a question that's been asked many times before but I'd love to hear the wide range of responses from Gooners across the generations.

I know most people will point to an individual game as their lowest point; a view that I can sympathise with and may I suggest any lost cup final or semi final, plus Wrexham away for good measure !

However, my lowest moments have always been when I can sense an end to an era - a time when it just isn't working anymore. For the list

1. The end of the Howe era. A great coach but never a manager and seeing him stood on the touchline at York in 1985 after a woeful FA Cup defeat was a real low point. Some awful football too

2. The end of the Graham era - watching the man behind the 1987, 1989, 1991 teams (and the most exciting of the lot in 1992 albeit trophyless), then allow us to drift into a mid-table, dour outfit with a midfield more mediocre than today's (there was certainly no Cesc equivalent) was depressing. Jensen, Morrow , Selley, Hiller anyone ?

3. Last week at Chelsea - effectively the end of the Wenger era. Many others will disagree and point to midweek results. I stand by my initial thoughts - another season of finishing at least 10 points + behind the champions. A project that has hit the buffers

So.....for me it's not individual games, it's more little windows of time

How about you ?

Just after Liverpool won the FA Cup in 2001. :( :(

In hindsight, the pain of that day made me appreciate winning the Double 12 months later even more.

Nayim's extra time goal was a shattering moment, too :(

Oddly....

Solksjaer and Sheringham's injury time heroics in winning the CL was also a very, very low moment, as they were our bitter rivals back then

Birmingham away 2 seasons back was an absolute killer!!! not felt that angry, frustrated, emotional and low for many a year! :x :(

Bit of a weird one since it all turned out right in the end but mine was against Liverpool at home in the invincibles season. Had just seen us lose against the Mancs in the fa cup followed by the chavs in the CL and we were losing at h/t and i was convinced we were going to blow it all.

But then came Thierry :barscarf: :barscarf:

And all was good.

Other than that Spurs in 91 was convinced we'd do the double :banghead:

Of the games ive been at it has to be the Cup Winners Cup Final 1995 i can remember walking back to the coach to take us straight to the airport i had never felt so gutted about a game of football as that one. I went to the cup final of '98 and as Adams lifted the FA cup i remember saying to my brother remember Paris '95 going through shit times makes you enjoy the good better i think.

There was also the European Cup Final 2006 i didnt go to the game instead watched it at home i can honestly say i didnt enjoy a single minute of it and after Barca equalised i said to my wife thats it they will win it now and they did. At the end i said i fucking hate football i wish i was into motor sports or something else nothing you love should ever make you feel so bad... Didnt last long though

Also Henry leaving the day it was announced he was joining Barca was my birthday fucked the whole day up
