Wenger talking to 'definite transfer targets'

Post by projoe »

Arsène Wenger has been talking to his "definite transfer targets" and hopes to do business before the World Cup begins.

The Arsenal manager has been linked with a number of new players in recent weeks after his side dropped out of the reckoning in the Champions League and Premier League. Speaking ahead of the weekend game against Manchester City, Wenger was naturally not forthcoming on the names involved but did suggest he wanted to recruit before the tournament began in South Africa on June 11.

"I have definite transfer targets and I have been talking to people but I will not tell you to who," he told the Arsenal Matchday Programme.

The Frenchman then revealed there was a desire to bring in players ahead the summer tournament. He went on: "I believe the earlier you settle your team the better it is and the less anxiety you have."

Wenger added that he would not sign a player on their strength of their performance in South Africa "unless there is an exception there that nobody knew before. Also post-World Cup the prices are always artificial.

"Overall I feel it is very dangerous to buy on [the strength of] the tournament because sometimes there are players who are fresh and have not played the whole season. Everyone can have three weeks of glory as a football player. Ten years is a bit different."

1st: i wonder how many hes actually talking about?
2nd: how many will we actually get, probably just 1, being chamakh

I really don't understand this AW quote at all. If he's so concerned about buying established and proven players, who have demonstrated their qualities over a significant period of time, why does he continually opt for 16/17 year olds?

All on the last day of the transfer window, naturally.

Which is one of my greatest hates about AW at the moment - he's so fucking indecisive. Whether it's bringing in Arshavin or Chamakh, thinking about penning a new contract, wondering whether or not to offer Sol Campbell another year, having a think over bringing back Vieira... FFS, just make some fucking decisions and stop drawing everything out over months and months. By the time AA23 finally arrived in January 2009 (or was it February  ), I was more pleased that the case had finally been closed than I was that we'd actually signed a decent player.

What happened to the AW of old, the one who ruthlessly snatched Sol from the ****, and brought in Henry and the rest? He didn't seem to loiter around when it was time to decide whether or not to move stadiums.

So basically, grow some balls and start making some fucking decisions. And stop flaffing around like an old woman. It's tiresome.

Next season is, more than likely, going to be Wenger's trophyless season. His contract is up in the summer, so unless the squad win something significant, he'll be off (either pushed or walking). I'm pretty sure the last time he signed a new contract (after waiting a whole year to make up his mind) was about 2004.

He's saved the club so much money, particularly in the last 6 years, that he owes it to himself to spend a significant amount of money.

However, the day the world cup starts is the day our transfer spending ends. Before the last world cup we signed Rosicky, then I don't remember us signing anyone afterwards.

What happened to the AW of old, the one who ruthlessly snatched Sol from the y**s, and brought in Henry and the rest? He didn't seem to loiter around when it was time to decide whether or not to move stadiums.

I'm speculating but I see alot of this is that AW feels as though he has little margin for error. For example, is someone is going to cost, say £10million, plus wages he now see this as a bigger risk, unless he is offsetting against sales. Chamakh is not really a financial risk, as we are surely only taking adebayors wages to pay his, with no fee.

He has become ultra-cautious, in his link to the stadium and the club as a whole.

talk about Groundhog day!!
Last time he told us he would definitely make signings before the European championships (at season ticket renewal time) and it was total bullshit. The man is a compulsive liar!
The only signing pre-world cup is likely to be Chamakh. If he lies to the fans again this summer then that will be it for an awful lot of ST holders.
