I have a Nokia E71, and from my experience I'd recommend anything in Nokia's E Series line. I think E72 is the latest in that line but not 100% sure.
You could always get the E71, probably cheap in comparison with other phones now, but isn't too lacking in technology (as far as I'm concerned anyway, I'm not one to keep up with the latest gadgets...). Unless you're desperate for a good camera - E71 has a 3.2 megapixel, which is pretty weak really...but E72 has a 5 megapixel.

You don't need an iphone app to do that.DB10GOONER wrote:Have a regular Sony Erricson camera phone/walkman. But am impressed shitless by the fact that there is an iphone app that lets you program your sky+ FROM THE FUCKING PUB (or anywhere else)!!! Quality or what?!
You can do it by text message from any phone.
Call Sky and they will explain how.

Im also in the Nokia E71 camp at the moment (work issue smartphone).
It is a good piece of kit that handles an all manor of tasks very well. The Mail for Exchange profile has recently been upgraded to v3.0 which includes HTML format (albeit not as default), and with free Sat Nav now available on all Nokia smartphones, it is a serious contender.
It is similar to the Blackberry layout, although many reputable review sites have rated it better than the Blackberry range (helped i suppose by the fact Nokia now owns Symbian)
My only irritation is that you cannot disable the A2DP bluetooth functionality (as oppose to the normal BT profile), but this has only become a problem with my new car kit.
Oh, and there is also a SKY+ app for Symbian phones (E71 included) that lets you view the 7 day planner and remote record (no need for text messages)
On the iphone front, i must admit, it is a fantastic piece of kit with a very innovative operating system and faultless resistive screen. However, a few guys i know that have them say the only problem is with the actual "phone" part of it (which is a fundamental flaw really for a phone), but with the eagerly anticipated release of the Iphone 4.0 later this year, i would not rush out to buy a 3G/3GS just yet!
Do what i do - Nokia E71 for a phone, 3rd gen iPod touch for apps! (i even have an app on my nokia which allows me to use my 3G connection as a wifi hotspot, so i can use all the iPod apps outside of the usual wifi restraints)
Hope that helps
