history book recommendation

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

history book recommendation

Post by brazilianGOONER »

sorry that i posted this outside of the book thread, it's just that not many people go there anyway, only a few regulars. feel free to delete this or lock it if you want.

so, can anyone recommend me a good book on the history of europe? one that is available for sale at a common website, of course... i've been reading through websites for a long time, but they're not always reliable and usually don't have enough depth. it's not big beautiful pictures that i want (as those can be found easily by googling) but an inteligent and well written and organized book...

tks :)

edit: books on the history of specific areas (i.e. britain, scandinavia) are also apreciated :)

Good start I always get my pupils to look at is the
British History for Dummies book

Written by Dr Sean Lang
Published by Wiley and Sons

The illustrated version is excellent

This series of books "For Dummies' is a good starting point.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/European-Histor ... pd_sim_b_2

http://www.amazon.co.uk/British-History ... pd_sim_b_2

This "Times" Book on the ethnic peoples of Europe, is also useful, and cheap!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Times-Guide-Peo ... 824&sr=1-3

The Times Atlas of European History will be useful, with maps.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/European-Histor ... 091&sr=1-1

The Times newspaper also do other good Atlases, such as London, World History, World War Two.
They are available on amazon.co.uk

bG when you come over in September will you be doing much travelling within Britain or will it just be a London/Arsenal thing? There are loads of historical places outside of the capital and i could give you some pointers.

Sorry this is off the topic of books but to see them with your own eyes is better in many ways

it looks like i asked in the right place, didn't i?  :barscarf: :barscarf:

thank you very much for the tips sammy and quartz. I know very little (wasn't interested in history back when i was in school), so my knowledge level is pretty low. i heard about those 'dummies' books, but i didn't think they were good, for some reason. i'm gonna buy both of them (the europe and britain ones) so thanks for the tip really. 8)

you were off this week right, flash? i had a slight change of plans, mate. instead of taking one month vacations in september i'm gonna quit my job in march and spend april, may and june in europe. at least one month of those i'm definetaly staying in britain. i want to watch as many arsenal matches as possible, but there are a few other places i want to go for a couple of days in between games as well (dublin, galway, a few castles in scotland, lake district, etcetera).

i'm spending a few hours everyday planing the trip and reading about the places, and ended up falling in love with the history. that's the reason of my sudden interest in european history. i want to read a couple of books on the subject so that when i'm over i can really understand what happened and spot the important things :barscarf: :barscarf:

about pointing some historic sites outside london, i'm surely going to ask you to do that, mate. i want to see as much as possible in the short time that i'm over there :barscarf:

OK

If I were travelling that distance to the UK, with your itinerary, I would go to an Irish wiskey distillery, Stonehenge, a few castles and Loch Ness... :barscarf:

Thanks for ignoring my previous post

Make sure you take different bus and walking tours of London. They have loads with different themes. Time Out magazine, a weekly magazine, will list these.

Hobsbawm, E., Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century 1914-1991 (London, 1994)

Mazower, M., Dark Continent: Europe’s Twentieth Century (London, 1998)

both left wing writers, but written in a refreshingly thematic way, as opposed to a dull, chronological method.

if you would like to know why **** is censored i can point you in the direction of:

Holmes, C., Anti-Semitism in British Society 1876-1939 (London, 1979)

Payne, S. G., A History of Fascism, 1914-1945 (Wisconsin, 1995)

Thurlow, R., Fascism in Britain, A History 1918-1985 (Oxford, 1987)

if you're REALLY interested in British fascism and anti-Semitism let me know and i'll post the entirety of my dissertation (first class 8)) bibliography. or i could just email you a pdf...

but seriously, those 2 at the top are cracking books.

Yes mate had a week on the south coast and that what it made me think of when you asked for history books. Luckily we only had 1 day where the weather wasnt too good and being a history lover we went to town called Battle and you can walk around the battlefield of the last time Britain was succesfully invaded and conquered which was in the year 1066 with a small phone style guide it points out all the points of the landscape and battle points and as you walk around eventually taking you to the point they believe the English King was killed. This part of our history is very famous and is taught in schools etc but to actually be there and listen to the story as you walk is quite amazing....

As i said there is loads to do and see in Britain alaone so if you had a month and was prepared to travel you can really get to see lots. I'll be happy to help nearer the time if you want any advice

cheers, davey! i'll read a couple on early history like the 'dummy' ones and then i'll concentrate on 20th century. those two that you recommend have very good reviews on the web, looks great. thanks, mate!

 :D :D :D 8)

it's a big shame that the tourism visa only allows me to stay for 3 months. i'd love to stay longer, i'm sure i'll leave a lot of stuff i want to see for some other time
