DAY 1 OF QUITTING SMOKING

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

DAY 1 OF QUITTING SMOKING

Post by merson_is_god »

I went to the nurse yesterday and got some patches and an inhalator to try and stop smoking. I'm using them as of today to hopefully quit this awful, smelly, expensive habit FOR GOOD!

Any words of advice from any ex-smokers who managed to quit?

Cheers,

MIG

Well, I've smoked alot of drugs back in the day but not cigs. My old man was a 60 to 80 a day man and he just stopped one day. Stopped cold. And he was fucking unbearable to be around for about a week but he never smoked again. Not many people can do that though.

I think the thing is it is also a habit as well as addictive. The patches will help the addiction but you need to "train" your mind out of the habit. Everytime you feel like a smoke do something else that "rewards" your brain. Eat something nice (but non-fatty), have a *****, get the missus to blow you.

It's all in the mind...

Good luck MIG!

Not sure about any tips for quitting, because I've never smoked, but you can be content with making a good decision though!

Does drinking beer make you want to go back to being a smoker? If so, I'll make a fortune if I can keep this non-smoking up!

Ive never smoked as such but heard if you put the money away each day/week you would have spent on cigarrettes and when it builds up buy yourself something good its a good incentive to keep going

Hmmm... Well I went to a NHS quit thingy, whereby you go into a group firstly, to discuss, my main problem with quitting was I could do it with patches but would start again when then course had run it's course (usually 6-8 weeks)

So they just said, don't take any notice of that, and use the products longer, they also said that you could use patches/gum/losenges, so I was on the whole lot at the start. Top dozes of those 3 products, now nearly a year later, I'm on gum (lowest strength, which I have occassionally and a patch (lowest strength from time to time) Also gave up the booze for around 2 months, as I associated that with smoking (and smoking loads) If I go to the pub now, I bung a low strength patch on, and make sure I've got plenty of gum with me, although 1 stick normally does the trick.

My girlfriend quit at the same time as me, and she had the pill called Champix, and she said it was excellent, you can also smoke on them, but it does something to the brain receptors, and just makes you forget about smoking, and didn't suffer any side effects, and she's been quit nearly a year also.

The only side effects I had, were crazy, trippy dreams on the full strength 24 hour patches, they were brilliant, but subsided when I cut the strength down on them.

Anyway, good luck with it, and I hope the above information helps you a bit.

I gave up on 3 March 2005 (can still remember the date). I tried the usual doctor, patches etc then one morning after a night out I reached for the cigs and said no, enough is enough.

You must be committed as opposed to half arsed about it. Don't beat yourself up if you do fall off. I found the patches great and the inhaler good when in the pub.

It didn't seem to make much difference to my finances but people tell me I should have saved up all my ciggie money and treated myself to something.

However I found giving up smoking easy compared to losing the beergut, eating healthy and staying fit but that's another story.

Good luck anyway.

Best of luck I gave up for 3months two years ago, but went back. I didnt use any patches or gum and like many was a moody fucker for a good week.

I fully intend to give up but as mentioned it is a mental thing too, which was what messed me up. You really have to want to quit I think, and im not quite there yet.

Best of Luck mate :barscarf:

I had the same last night, 3 of them in fact! I wasn't able to sleep properly though.

Heard a lot about this Champix, someone at work gave up with that stuff.

Still not had a fag and I've been awake 9 hours! :-P

Good luck.

When you feel like a smoke, say to yourself that you will wait 20 minutes and then decide.

Make sure you fill those 20 minutes with something worthwhile and the feeling can pass.
