Team and formation for the coming season

Post by steve1987 »

Mods - feel free to lock/chuck this thread, but I did look to see if this is being discussed elsewhere.

One thing that people don't seem to be discussing is what kind of team we'll be putting out this coming season. Without wishing to sound like AW, having players like RvP, Walcott, Djourou, Gibbs, Denilson, Fabianksi, Bendtner fit all season will be like having new signings (I never said they were necessarily good ones, by the way!)

So the question is, how will we line up?

Almunia or Fabianksi (or another one)

Will Gibbs overtake Clichy?

Koscielny or Djourou?

Will Chamakh be a regular starter? This is the big one for me in terms of formation. If so, do we go 442, or would we (as I think is more likely) shift RvP wide, and play 433.

And if Chamakh does play, then that means one of Nasri, Arshavin, and Diaby can't play. Diaby would be the obvious name, but then we'd only have Song as an even remotely defensive minder player in the side.

My team would be:

Almunia :banghead:

Sagna Kos TV Clichy(just over Gibbs)

Song
Fab Nasri

Arshavin RvP
Chamakh

Over attacking, I know - but it means we see our best players - and no Denilson or Diaby!

We'll almost certainly play 4-3-3 as we did last season, and during the friendlies this pre-season.

That said, it'll be interesting to see what happens with Chamakh IF RvP stays fit (I know, I know   ). My guess is that Chamakh might find himself on the right of a front 3 at times.

Koscielny will be Vermaelen's partner - I'm sure of that.

Almunia (I'm sad to say :( ) would get my vote in goal.

The rest of the team picks itself.

Almunia, Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Clichy, Song, Diaby, Cesc, Nasri, Arshavin, Van Persie.

If we get no more signings...

Almunia

Sagna - Vermaelen - Koscielny - Clichy

Rosicky - Cesc - Song - Arshavin

Chamakh - RVP

It's hard though. Could chuck Walcott in there, or change it to a 5-4-1 - saying that, we'll play 4-5-1 against Liverpool for sure.

Almunia

Sagna - Vermaelen - Koscielny - Clichy

Walcott - Rosicky - Cesc - Song - Arshavin

RVP

I'd go with:

New Keeper. Or Sczhezny. None of the other three

Sagna
Clichy
Vermaelen
Kolicesny

Fabregas
Song
Nasri

Arshavin
Chamakh
Van Persie

A little bit lightweight in the middle, but Denilson, Diaby etc are passengers. Wilshere will be an impact sub to begin with, but could come in for any of the forward 5 players.

The thing that I find bizarre about these threads, is that it appears some people still can't predict what team Wenger will pick... :?

Why on earth does CIG think we'll play 4-4-2?? - we didn't play like that last season nor have we in this seasons friendlies!!! - don't you think there's a clue in there somewhere???

Also, digger - how many times has Wenger actually gone with Nasri and Cesc in midfield??? he almost always prefers to play Diaby or Denilson alongside Song - I don't expect that to change, as Nasri is more attack minded and if that midfield was in his mind, I'm sure we would have seen it more often by now, surely???

And benglenton   SONG OUT AND WILSHERE IN??? WTF??   - Wenger will not do that!!!

And Mikey???!!!! - you don't think Wenger will pick Nasri??? yet he'll pick Wilshere and Frimpong??

wenger said he wouldn't play fabregas and nasri in the middle as it makes us too lightweight and offensive, so my guess is he won't play wilshere there too. i guess he would go with:

almunia (flappy); sagna, koscielny, vermaelen, clichy; song, cesc, diaby; nasri, rvp, arshavin.

which is exactly the team i would play too. 8)

At least I justified it. "Passengers" = a polite way of saying "SHIT".

Very true!

By the way, Nasri, Song and Cesc is a midfield I'd like to see as I think Nasri can play more reserved (defensive) when need be!

It's posts like that BG that make me proud to be in the same (homo)clique as you!

Fella, I agree with every word and the starting XI Wenger will go with! :gus:

In fact, I think that team/formation is clearly Wenger's preferred choice - but time will tell...
