As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Its Denton not Delton and he was known by many Arsenal regulars - especially the ones that went to Arsenal through the 80's and early 90's....before the bandwagoners started coming. (Gooner.ed - have edited title of thread to correct)
Totally agree with N13Gooner ..You had to be around in the 80's-90's . First saw him climbing up a fence at Grimsby away in the F.A cup to celebrate a Charlie Nicholas hat-trick . Before football got Trendy ...

This is the point Gus the legend was making I think, people not even knowing his name getting all emotional.
I can see Gus' point, but don't think you have to know someone personally to show respect. Think of all the minutes silence. Did you know Alan Ball, George Armstrong? I didn't know David Rocastle, but still sing his name.
And I didn't know Denton - but I did speak to him once, and saw him on so many occasions. And he always had a smile on his face. And he was always larger than life. And he made you feel safe at places that you really oughtn't feel safe.... He is as much a part of gooner history as Herbert Chapman. So if people that didn't know him feel moved to write their RIP's then I think they should go right ahead!
And to those people who until a couple of days ago had never heard of the guy (despite several references on this forum in the last few months!) then look at some of the postings on other sites, educate yourself and you'll understand why he was a true legend!!!

You couldn't have said it better. What makes us a family is our association with the Gooners & I see no reason why we shouldn't pay our respects to one of us, even if we don't personally know them
What I remember most about Denton, was the fact that you always knew when he was there. Especially at away games. You knew he was there because the other mob were practising the ancient martial art of "run like f**k"!! The mixed emotions about the guy probably stem from peoples different attitudes towards what Denton and his like stood for. Johnny Hoy, Spider (how many of you remember him?) Jenkins and of course, Denton are legends. They took their love of Arsenal in a direction that a lot of people don't like, but they followed our team over land and sea (and leicester) and they are gooners. Whatever your views, the mans' family deserves our condolences. Denton was not only Top Boy, but a top geezer. I think so, anyway. 'nuff said!
I have very dim and distant memories of Johnny Hoy, he was our top geezer when I very first started going in 71 but I don't think I ever saw him, just heard about him and used the hear the north bank singing "Johnny's gonna get ya" now and then. He seemed to disappear from the scene not long after I statred going but I could be wrong about that, time does seem to warp memories somewhat Somebody told me he moved up to Newcastle in the 70s but not sure if that's true or not. Love to hear more stories about him but not many people seem to remember him all that well. I do know that he's dead now tho. Hope him and Denton are having a great time up there RIP.
