Shit day at work so I put the 49 undefeated DVD on. Put a smile on my face but also made me appreciate yet again how awesome this team was. The speed of the counter attacks, the awareness of the players, the vision and above all the desire to work for each other.
The amount of goals we scored on the counter attack was because we defended and closed down in numbers, which does not happen nearly enough these days.
The other thing that stands out like dogs balls is the fact that there are leaders all over the pitch. At any one time there were at least 5 players on the pitch that could've been captain and were they in today's team probably would be.
On a final note, the age and experience of the majority of the squad meant it was easier for younger players to develop. FFS, even Pennant looked like he was going to be a star when he was playing with these blokes.
Forget Gervinho bring some leadership and a bit of *word censored* into the team Arsene and give us our Arsenal back.

Re: 49
Sad but true I watched the Bergkamp/TH 100 goals partnership DVD those were the days...I actually think I perfer to take a risk with 15/16 excellent players, and throw the younger players in as and when required. They cannot be worse then the some of the bunch we have now in reserve.aussiegoon wrote:Shit day at work so I put the 49 undefeated DVD on. This is the point though where it shows that Wenger just got lucky.JMascis666 wrote:The mad thing about The Invincibles is that the same bloke was in charge of them, who is in charge of the current rabble.
Where the hell did it all go so wrong.
The 49ers had world class players all over the pitch, and leaders all over the pitch. Experience and Quality.
OK, AW bought a few of them in, but David Dein was still there, convincing them to sign, and sorting the money side of it out, and we are The Arsenal, we play in the Premier League, and we are in London, all HUGE factors in anyone coming in to this club.
Wenger did very little to make this squad so great. Bergkamp being at the Club encouraged great players to sign, then Wenger being french made a few great french and francophone players sign for us. Wenger got lucky that he knew Henry from before, and he ( TH ) also encouraged players to come to us. Of course they ALSO signed because of the huge wages given to them by DD and the fact that the PL was the place to be, and London is the only place to be in England, so that helped as well.
This squad played for each other, they played to win, they were not satisfied with 2nd ( certainly not for the next 20 years!!! ) and they tracked back and attacked quickly because they wanted to win collectively, for The Arsenal...and for themselves.
Jens in goal, Sol in defence, organising everything, PV in midfield, and then TH, RP, and DB attacking. Not one of them would have been taught anything by Wenger - they knew it all already. There were older heads in that squad to keep the younger kids grounded and to look after them, and to give them something to aspire to, and the youngsters gave the older lads a push to keep on producing the quality.
I don't believe for one moment that Wenger told them anything about tactics or formation or anything. These players could have been brilliant if one of Pat Rice's traffic cones had been in charge of them.
They went out on the pitch and played football the only way they knew how.
This current squad has been assembled by Wenger. Wenger has taught them how to play. He has taught them how to give 100%. He has taught them that a goal from a corner is not 'real football'. He has taught them that 2nd ( or 3rd or 4th ) is a trophy.
We can do much, much better than this fraud and charlatan.
WENGER OUT!

Just reminds me that no matter how much it costs to get in, and no matter how much players are paid, football these days is a pale imitation - and not just Arsenal.
That Arsenal side would have walked away with the domestic trophies these last 2-3 years..... Where is the like of Henry, Bergkamp, Viera....Beckham, Scholes etc in today's premier league?
