The Cologne away 'not really that official' thread!!

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The Cologne away 'not really that official' thread!!

Who's going? Where to drink pre and post-match?

I'm driving there with a mate, we're staying at a hostel bang next to the cathedral...
Should be a belter, drinking and smoking on the terraces and a good night out after that! :bestmates:

Will be in Cologne from about 1pm. No idea on places on to drink, looking forward to plenty of beer during the match though!

there is a big square near the cathedral where everyone sups. Loads of bars. If you want late night action head to "the ring" which is where all the late night bars are etc.

I've stayed in that hostel before, it's a bit of a dump but at the end of the day it has a bed and that's all you need.

Stay away from the over priced bars down by the waterfront, we asked the guy at the hostel for good places to drink and he pointed out some late night bars in the ring which were good value.

Remember if you get pints that you'll get 1 euro back for each glass you hand back - learnt that lesson the hard way!

Great city.
Went to the Monchengladbach game in 96 when they had to play at Colognes stadium. I seem to remember a scouser at the back singing your never walk alone and getting started on by Arsenal fans as he wouldn't shut up and then Cologne fans trying start a ruck with Gladbach fans. Think this was Wengers first game.

Around the ring area is best and great for late night drinking, be warned though the 0.02l can be a handful after a dozen or so.

In the local bars the following is useful to know;

The Traditional Koln beer or Kolsch is the drink of the town, served in small 0.2l glasses called Flasch or Stangen. A unique drinking experience, the beers are tabbed by pencil on your coaster, and keep on coming, the moment you empty your glass. Signal your fulfillment by placing your coaster on top of your glass......Enjoy...
