North London Derby Memories...
North London Derby Memories...
Just posted on another thread about memories from a past North London Derby and this got me thinking, some of the best moments of my life have come as we absolutely took the piss out of our mates up the road (and I’m not ashamed to say it), so what are some of your favourite memories from derby day? I’m of a younger generation to most of you lot on here, so my only NLD memories are from the past 15 or so years, really, but I’m sure there are a few of you on here with some absolutely legendary tales. Were any of you at WHL in ’71?

My Dad was in there with his brother and some mates. He said it was fucking electric. His fondest memories, however, came after the game when all the Gooners converged on the pubs outside the ground (he did tell me the names of some of them, but I've forgotten now). Oddly enough, his memory gets a bit hazy from then onwards. I wonder why...

my first nld was in 86 at the lane,, we lost and i remember we wore the away strip
also my first welcome from the **** army after walking down the high st
my best memory was the 2-1 a couple of years that when freddie got the winner,, but the best part was in the arsenal tavern after and the spu*s team bus was driving past and got stuck in traffic,, i never saw a pub empty so fast and the bus got surrounded by gooners,, i stayed in the pub minding my pint
but looked out the window and saw robbie keane looking at me so gave him the wanker sign and went back to my pint
dublin *word censored*( sorry db10 )

I was at the lane in 87 when Rocky got us to wembley . We were losing 1-0 and time was ticking and to my shame now I said to my mate "come on lets go I dont want to see them (spuds) celebrating at the end and jhe said " no lets stay" and then Ian Allinson and Rocky did the business . I could make myself out at the end of the match too when the cameras went into the crowd and there was me and my mate faces crushed up against the bloody fence!
I can't be 100% sure but I've got a horrible feeling the first NLD I attended was when we lost 5-0 at the Lane in 1983. To make matters worse, I was in the home end. Fucking excrutiating.
But I didn't learn my lesson. A few months later, I was in the home end at the Lane again, for a Legaue Cup game I think. It was fantastic that we won 2-1 (I think Charlie got at least one goal) but a million times worse than the defeat in not being able to celebrate!

Anyone go to the Makita international tournament at Wembley in the pre season of 1988 when we played sp*rs? It sounds like a shit one compared to WHL71 but it was good.
We played sp*rs for the first time ever at Wembley and f**king thrashed them 4-0 Gascoigne played his first game for them i think paul stewart did too(i hated him) think it was only 3/4 full but us gooners were in numbers. Davis, Rocky and Marwood played them off the pitch and Alan Smith scored a few. The next day we played Bayern Munich and sp*rs played AC Milan before our game everything they did fell on their faces it was so funny. sp*rs went on to lose (again) and we beat Munich 3-0 to become winners. Even though it was a "friendly" still lovely to beat them.
I thought then we were playing great and the newspapers were even saying all pre season how good we were, as we all know we went on to win the League Anfield '89 and all that. It was a really good 2 days out.

I was at that game, it was superb. Went to school the next day hoarse and found that so were nearly all my class mates. For the game itself we got tickets in the shelf and then told the police we were in the wrong end. They escorted us thru the crowd and we were soaked in gob. Then when we were escorted around the outside of the pitch the Arsenal end gave us a huge applause as they thought we were being thrown out for fighting (I was 14!). The only stain on the day was we all got attacked afterwards in my uncle's van and a crunt hit my sister as well as us lot but we were saved from a further beating by about 6 gooners in a car behind who came to our rescue.Chunky The Gooner wrote:I was at the lane in 87 when Rocky got us to wembley . Re: North London Derby Memories...
Got many great memories of nlds but unfortunately I was'nt at this one. I was following it on the radio, no live commentary in those days, just occaisional reports. I had my spud supporting mate with me and with a few minutes to go and us clinging onto the 0-0 that would have been good enough to take the title on goal difference, the announcer told us that there'd been a goal at whl and they'd be going over in a minute??? a fuckin minute????? must have been the longets minute of my life I reckon, me and my mate were both holding our breaths, me praying it was us who'd scored and obviously him praying that they'd stopped us winning the title. When they finally went over and told us that Ray Kennedy had scored I ran round our lounge like a dememted mad kid for about five minutes non stop and of course let my spud mate know who was champions as welltonysaunders wrote:Just posted on another thread about memories from a past North London Derby and this got me thinking, some of the best moments of my life have come as we absolutely took the piss out of our mates up the road (and I’m not ashamed to say it), so what are some of your favourite memories from derby day? Many other memories of nlds, my firste few seasons away there we used to take the piss big time, **** army?? not too many about in those days and we used to take the place over. That all changed in the mid 70s tho. Seen too many to mention really but one that sticks out is the 87 league cup semis there, first game, the famous announcement from the spuds tannoy

I'd never really thought to record anything b4tonysaunders wrote:Nice high quality videos there, JD
but that moment had2b recorded
stunning day
I remember being @shite tart lane - chris armstrong scored and he nearly ran in2 the away fans - think he closed his eyes
luckily 4him he realised in time
think we lost - weird how clearly I remember wins and how quickly I blank out defeats
at the time the '93 fa cup semi was huge
after '91 I thought I'd never see us play them in a semi again
thought we'd never get proper revenge
so that meant a lot
think my first few nlds where late 80's 4gettable draws

some things never change..they really are the scum of London..Glad to hear you were bailed out by the goons..dbrien wrote:I was at that game, it was superb. Been to 2 NLD's..One around 2005 I think, Reyes got the only goal, and Last year at the emirates..I remember thinking they'd be looking to make a right noise being at our new home for the 1st time, but they were shite all game, suppose they were just in awe of the place and maybe it just nailed home just how far away from us they are..
Funniest bit was they're dejected side coming over to clap the 50 or so that were left at the end of the game..and in turn getting dogs abuse from everyone the other side of the away section who'd stayed to enjoy the moment..
Funnily enough never seen any trouble at these games, but in that particular game me and my old man were at them Barn for a while after the match, and supposedly a couple of vans of 'em showed up..basically after anyone with any will to stand had left..they really are solid that lot!!
Still need to get to the Lane..just for the experience..
Some good memories here boys, keep them coming..

My first NLD was in 1978, my old man is a spud and to his credit never forced them on me and always took me to the games (mostly in the arsenal section) This particular game we had his boss's season tickets and sat in the main stand and I insisted on wearing my red and white bobble hat and scarf - Sunderland put us one-nil up inside 30 seconds and we ended up 5-0 victors. Brady won goal of the season that day and Stapleton was either runner up or 3rd in the same game.
I was also there when the score was reversed - 83 i think, and when Rocky put us through to Wembley in 87.
