Beckham in Sydney

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Beckham in Sydney

Post by RaM »

Well people, tomorrow night sees me travelling a total of fifteen/twenty minutes to the olympic stadium to watch Sydney FC v LA Galaxy.

Feels weird to be going to a match where there are players of any sort of 'high(ish) standard. I'm used to seeing the world's best in league/union quite frequently (as you guys do every week with Arsenal of course) but for football its a strange experience. The closest I've gotten would be Sydney vs Japan's Urawa Reds.

Anyway....just so you all could know.

Oh, and...anyone else going to the game?? :D

Sorry had to do that, just so i could have a chance at not being the outsider who NEVER gets to speak about attending the game.

Just checked wikipedia; Sydney FC have Juninho playing for them, he is a very good player, used play for Middlesbrough and has won the World Cup in 2002. He is probably the best player in the Australian League. They've also got Michael Bridges who Leeds bought for 5 million once. RaM, you probably know all of it, I am just saying it for people who can't be bothered with research

Look out for Abel Xavier, RaM:

He probably looks like this, right now:

Anyway, I think it is fairly easy to spot him

Khalid, you were probably about 4 when Juninho went to Middesbrough, but don't worry, we remember him, and Bridges and Xavier too.

Hope you have fun RaM - Although you wouldn't get me near watching that freak show with that freak player. It's all as false as his wife's tits (Now you see, that's in context!)

You are right on that one but I remember him winning the Carling Cup for Middlesbrough :) This brings up a joke that you’ve probably heard before:

Why is Middlesbrough like an old bra???

They've hardly got any support and have only one cup!!!

Enjoy the game Ram, I doubt if dippy david will get the hostile abuse he got from us at Highbury  I hear he's on a major charm offensive there :? When I was in Oz last year or maybe the year before I did notice that one of our old Arsenal <ahem> "legends" from way back was managing a club in the Australian league, possibly Adelaide if my memory serves me well, a certain Mr John Kosmina. I saw him in his prime, he came on as sub one night and erm... that's it. I'd say he's probably the best Australian we've ever had at the club  Is he still managing Adelaide?

Coincidentally, Kosmina is now the Sydney FC manager. :D

Sydney: 5 [Brosque (2), Zadkovich, Middleby, Fyfe]

Galaxy: 3 [Beckham, Buddle, Donovan]

Beckham's goal from a trademark curling free kick, but Sydney dominated the game, it was 3-0 before he scored.

LA had a player sent off towards the end for a second booking, and Beckham himself was carded.

Oh, and after half an hour he twisted his ankle and hobbled around for a few minutes, gave the crowd a bit of a scare.

And just a matter of sheer shock, they sold (I'd guess) at least 5,000 Beckham shirts this week. There were people wearing LA shirts who have never watched a match in their life! Believe it or not, the guy sitting in front of me arrived late and asked "Is Beckham on? Which one is he?"

Well a good night in all, incredible Beckham drew a crowd of 80,250 appx. when a competitive Sydney FC match struggles to get 16,000.

Good review RaM. So it would seem the Beckham marketing machine is still ticking along nicely. Love him or hate him, the media frenzy that still surrounds this guy and his stick wife is nothing short of phoneminal. To draw a crowd of 80,000+ is impressive by any means.

What did you have to pay for tickets?

I dunno what the adult ticket price was, but because I'm a student I can get a cheaper ticket. So mine was $30. Pretty good really when the Wallabies charge $100 for their matches.

Well there you go, a connection between Arsenal and Sydney FC  They are now officially my Australain team and will endeavor to get to see them next time I'm in Sydney 8) I take it they don't usually play home games at The Telstra? Glad you enjoyed the game, you probably had a much beter time than I just had at the boozer watching tonights display in Seville :( Oh well goin to bed to sulk now but it could have been a lot worse, at least we're already through to the knockout stage not that that excuses our performance :?

They usually play their home matches at the Sydney Football Stadium (previously Aussie Stadium). Its in the middle of the city, and only has half the capacity of Telstra.
