Can I clear something up. As I understand it the difference between finishing top or 2nd in your group is if you finish 2nd you have to play your home game in the 1st leg then the away game. It won’t mean you get an easier draw in next round. Just reading some post’s on hear people seem to think it will make a difference to who we play in next round.

In the draw for the next round of the Champions League, first placed teams are placed in one pot, while second placed teams are placed in the other. This means that first place teams will not have to play other first placed teams in the next round.

Therefore, it is better to be placed first to avoid other first placed teams as opposed to being placed second and having to play to the teams who have topped their groups.

So, if we finish second, we could well play Milan, Barcelona, or Real Madrid in the next round as oppsed to the prospect of facing the likes of Marseille, Lazio and Rangers.
