Who would you sign?

Post by Babatunde »

This isn't Football Manager, but this is a genuine question.

Arsenal as you are all aware, made a £25 million profit in the transfer market this summer. Added to this £25 million profit in dealings is the £40 million transfer funds Wenegr had available to begin with. You also have the untouched £41 million Toure and Adebayor money.

At a conservative estimate let us call it £80 million.

Now imagine a wonderful scenario whereby a Director of Football is appointed to undercut Wenger, (a la Commolli wit Jol at Spuds) and transfers are taken out of Wenger's hands. You have the ability to sign 3 players for Arsenal, in any positions and the budget you have is £80 million. Take ridiculous wages as being prohibitive (meaning Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Ronaldo are just pipe dreams)....

Which Three players would you sign that are realistically gettable?

For my money these are the three players I'd sign in order of importance.

1. Schweinsteiger. I think this guy encapsulates everything that Arsenal miss. Outstanding long-range shooting? Check. Superb set-piece executioner? Check. Positionally flawless in defensive midfield? Check. Box to box? Check. Proven winner? Check. Bags of top level experience? Check. Superb tackler? Check. Outstanding passing range? Check check.
Signing someone like Bastian would mean Song could pack his bags and having next to Wilshere would be like watching superb porn, whilst smoking a fat spliff.

2. Pato.
I think Arsenal's attack is laughable. RVP is a superb player but aside from his obvious injury woes there is the never mentioned problem that he is fucking slow. Great striker but he lacks acceleration off the mark and that means Arsenal have no counter-attacking threat on the break. And no please don't mention Walcott, as he can barely control the ball on the counter (why not just stick Linford Christie there then).
Pato is an outstanding striker, lightening quick, incredible skill and takes players on which is something no Arsenal striker has been able to do since Henry. It's actually really sad to see painfully shit retards like Chamakh and Choo Young as Arsenal's striking options.

Pato is definitely gettable, Milan would sell him no questions as they are obviously finding it pretty tough to put up with paying Zlatan's outrageous salary and transfer fee, Robinho's stupid wages and fee AND Pato's also.

3. Mahmadou Sakho.
As a follower of French football, he is one of just three genuine quality players left in French football (the other two being Lloris and Hazard).
What's great about Sakho is that unlike the imbecilic Koscielny he actually understands positioning and is a great tackler. He's got bags of pace unlike Mertesacker, and he has a defensive brain unlike Djourou and every other defender at Arsenal. He's a leader and captained PSG as a young man. He's good enough to be selected regular for France (unlike Koscielny who cannot beat off competition from Younes Kaboul!).

A great attribute about Sakho is that he specialises in two positions: centre-back and left back. He's actually slightly better at left-back imo and that would mean we wouldn't have to watch Gimpy Gibbs get gimped over and over again. Sakho wouldn't cost much money at all seeing as his contract at PSG is running down and he ain't signed an extension.

I was really tempted to add Goetze instead of Schweinsteiger but I honest to God think Bastian would provide more.

Oh but sod that. If I had £80 mil the first thing I'd do is to pay that twat Wenger off, ring Pep Guardiola and offer him bags of cash!!!

wasn't arshavin bought with some of the ade/kolo money?

from what i've read in blogs and websites so far i think what we have in the bank for buying players is closer to 40-50M.

which by the way is more than enough to buy 2 top players imo.

Round and round and round. has it begun already.

sorry, you might have some good points in there somewhere but as soon as you quoted the "25m transfer fund + player sales" i nodded off.

wenger is a stubborn old c*nt who wouldnt buy a raffle ticket unless it had a sell on value.

ROFL Percy!

Pato and Batian would join because it would offer them a new challenge, in a better league. The PL is a better league than Bundesliga and Serie A. Also, the chance to giggle with Diaby and Song in the showers is surely too good to turn down?

yeah it is, but they win trophies albeit easier ones to win, but milan are stronger than last year, Milan is still a desirable club. Pato was expected to be a massive player when they got him, and I don't think they'll give up on him just yet.

I think we should:

Secure usmamov 1st.

Then go after big players.

Or kroenke gets his finger out, finds the money to buy the rest of the club and start investing.

Realistic would have to mean the wages being in line with the clubs current stance with contracts - you think Pato and Schweinsteiger fall into that category?

Not that we have anywhere near the amount of money to spend that you speculated in your post. How you think the Adebayor and Toure money is untouched is beyond me!

Is the PL a better league than Bundlesiga or Serie A though?

Not for my money, the Bundesliga is a far better more competitive, well run and fan friendly league, with alot better value for money!

Our league is a joke really! The only reason we havent collapsed so far is that, Liverpool and United are world names, and have worldwide fan bases.

The rest are keeping the money flowing through rich Oil money. That wont last! I want to see where these people will be in 5 years time.

Yes I suppose the Serie A is a mess, but again they are far cheaper, worldwide clubs like Juve, Milan clubs and others like Palermo, Napoli, Lazio and Roma who are up and coming.

Looking at the City-Napoli game the other day, I actually thought Napoli were the better side, and how much more have City spent on theirs?

The only thing seperating us from these leagues, is people like Alex Ferguson. United are a level above their clubs in many ways.

Totally agree with you on Napoli.
I think they shat on Citeh on Wednesday night, well impressed with them.
Also you have a good point on Bundesliga, it might actually conceivably be a better league than PL. I am tired and it is Friday. I was bored and trying to get out of doing more work. This thread is shit I concur.

Mods, you know what to do!!!
