FAO safctm (regarding away fans at the SOL)

I've heard that away fans will be relocated to the upper tier of the West or North Stand as of next year? Any truth to that?

Would be a major blow atmosphere and cost wise!

Aye, looks likely that they'll be moved to the upper north stand with the south stand being taken over by some of the people who were in the south west corner (the corner next to the away fans currently where our atmosphere comes from).

The hope seems to be to have a designated "home end" but the trouble is that it will probably be more expensive there than it is in the south west, so some from there wont want to pay extra to move and some like it because its near the away fans. It might work but I liked having the away fans in a good place for the atmosphere and am a bit worried that it'll get even worse when theyre moved

What the fuck is the thinking behind that??!! You NEVER put away fans up above home fans in a stand.

I remember the Landsdowne Road riot and the minute I saw they had put the Engerlish fans in an upper tier directly over some home fans I thought "Some poor fucker's getting one on the head tonight".

Rank stupidity.

Birmingham away is like that, home neanderthals above the away fans. I got hit in the shoulder by a coin when I went a few years back and my mate nearly got spat on at the 1-1 two seasons ago.

'cos he's a decent lad that has something to say. Arsenal and Sunderland have had a good relationship for a long time.

Every season a group of us go up there for the weekend to meet the lads from Peterlee and Horden. And they come down and stay with us, as they will be next weekend.

Personally, my association with them goes back more than 25 years and we've stood side by side taking on all-comers at the Mowbray Park Hotel in '91.

Seriously though, my best mate is a gooner and I agreed to go across to Roma away with him in the CL (the match that you won on penalties). I decided to join an Arsenal forum as Rome isnt the kind of place we fancied being isolated so I went on to find where all the gooners were going to be drinking (as it turned out the answer was pretty much anywhere there was drink available due to the alcohol ban). Having joined the forum and enjoyed the banter in the lead up to the game I decided to stick around afterwards.

I also post on a Sunderland forum as you'd expect but when I'm stuck trying to pass the working day I get a bit sick of just reading the usual old debates on the sunderland site (is gordon a good keeper, why are attendances dropping, should bruce stay or go etc etc), gets boring after a while.

Then there is the fact that, as Reg mentions, Sunderland and Arsenal have randomly had a good relationship over the years. There are recent things such as the game up at the SoL where Henry got his standing ovation from the SAFC fans (that he later said contributed to his decision to prolong his stay in England), the two sets of fans got on very well that day and I remember having a great night out following it with a few random gooners who had met me and my mates in the pub after the game. The matches between the two sides generally have good atmospheres between the fans tbh, not many who travel to Sunderland have a bad time and all are welcome to go to any pub wearing their strip without bother, equally most of our lot count Arsenal away as one of the best away trips where we're always made to feel welcome (completely the opposite of our trips to spurs where we have had a lot of battles over the years- deluded arsehole neighbours is another thing we have in common!)

Further back there are events such as Arsenal getting a massive result at Sunderland and their fans being applauded on the way back to the coaches at a time when many away games saw fans getting bricks chucked at them. Also when "The Bear" passed away there was a procession before a match with Sunderland which was held as a tribute and a good number of Sunderland lads joined it to pay their respects which hasnt been forgotten by a lot of the arsenal fans.

So basically this forum is a good laugh and I like the atmosphere on here and Arsenal are a club that I have a lot of time for with fans that I and most other Sunderland fans have a fair bit of mutual respect with. I like to read another clubs fans views on things such as the general state of football but also I like to see their opinions on their club- I love football and find it interesting to see how fans view their club differently from outsiders.

That and theres a lot of tit threads

More to the point why shouldn't a sunderland fan post on here? It's great having views from different people (such as when a few blokes from Dortmund + Udinese joined a few weeks ago) on Arsenal and other things.

I must admit I have always found Sunderland fans great too. (you are certainly better than your black and white neighbours) I also appreciate that Sunderland have a great history and I think I am right in saying that you have actually won more than Newcastle.

one of the first Arsenal games I went to was against Sunderland in 1984 which was a great game. I think Arsenal won 3-2.

Hope you lose next week though- what do you think of Bendtner?

Bendtners quality, been our best player this season by quite a distance. We'll lose next week unfortunately, probably quite heavily, but still, if we can start to pick up points in our home games we'll hopefully be fine for avoiding the drop. In terms of us against the mags, we've won more top flight titles which is the main prize (6 for us, the 5th highest total in England, they've won 4), but they've won more FA Cups and they try to claim that the inter city fairs cup that they won is actually a major european trophy (they say its the uefa cup in a previous guise but UEFA dont officially recognise it). Sunderland and Newcastle also had a battle in the english civil war at Boldon Hill, and we beat the fuckers there as well, we were parliamentarians (sp!) and they were royalists and an army from sunderland and scotland beat them and occupied their city for a while, so its a rivalry that goes back a fair while
