Arsenal’s Apocalypse Delayed (30/11)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Arsenal’s Apocalypse Delayed (30/11)

usual thread starter… I think the real issue about Henry leaving was that he felt he could not wait, at his age, for a developing group of players to peak. Brady and Stapleton left at a time when the Gunners were beginning to wane, especially Stapleton. Hopefully, when Cesc goes, as he surely must one day, the club will still be thriving, unlike the early 1980s. Who do you think was Arsenal’s worst player from that awful era?

I wouldn't say worst but certainly most frustrating player of this period, for me, was Graham Rix - just always thought he could do so much more? (cue lots of gags about him being a perv etc.)

I know that doesn't really answer the question but I don't think i have ever shouted at an Arsenal player more. :x

I was gutted by the sales of limpar and rocky but neither where playing
whilst talkin about players not being picked the underuse of davis was criminal
sale of merse was a big blow - but overmars was better
sale of anelka seemed tragic but henry was better
sales of petit & overmars was a disappointment then pires was better
petit never really replaced till bert (although petit was better)
viera leaving was the end of an era
but cesc can start his own

can one player be seen as titi's replacement...?
if we want to win titles our strikers need 45 odd goals between them imo
with RVP+Ade+Bendts+Theo thats a possibility

Now it seems our goals come from midfield or defence, so 45 from the forward isn't necessary. and you missed Eduardo :D

As to the rest I Agree, but I wonder how good Anelka would have been if he'd stayed.

A very good read!

Hopefully you're wrong about Cesc but only time will tell. If we start winning titles, challanging for CL every year he'll have no reason to leave for the next 10 years at least.

Also need to mention that whenever a discussion like this comes up I always come to think about Bergkamp. I find it exeptional that during his 10 years with the club he never even looked close to be leaving.

I'm interested that Jakarta went more frequently to games when we were crap. Sounds like my type of true supporter. :D

Lost his place to Martin Hayes, which says a lot

You're all being unnecessarily hard on Rixy, who after all did cross the ball to Alan Sunderland in the 79 Final for a piece of Arsenal history. :D His career ultimately tailed off :( but at least there were lots of positives :) - unlike some of the other characters from our past with whom he is being compared. Can anyone remember anything positive about Jeff Blockley, Gus Caesar?

Jakarta Casual - I'm in Thailand when we're playing Newcastle away.
How can I find a place to watch it. Star sports website is baflingme and all the Thai Arsenal sites are (unsurprisingly enough) in Thai.
Any tips...? Cheers.

Worst players from the early 1980s? That's a tough one. Steve Gatting? David Price? There must be other candidates, god knows we were shit back then.

Highbury JD - As the Newcastle game is on Sky Sports 1 it should be readily available in Thailand. I'm not an expert but I have been there and I'd try one of the big hotels, like the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok if that's where you are. Also the staff there are so friendly and speak perfect English, so will help you if it's at all possible. Hope this helps and you get to see/enjoy the game!
