Summer 2011 - Who was the best signing Arsenal made?

Post by 1989 »

My opinion on the new signings thus far:

A. Santos - HIT
Mertesacker - HIT
Benayoun - MISS
Jenkinson - MISS
Arteta - MISS
Gervinho - HIT
Chamberlain - HIT
J. Y. Park - N/A

Early doors yeah but what do you think?

Arteta is the flair player and the one that immediately stands out, but I think that over the entire season, Mertesacker will prove the best signing. He's the workhorse quietly powering on, affording the likes of Arteta to inject the creativity further up the field.

I pretty much agree with 1989.

I think the German giant will prove to be very good signing.

I'm hopeful about Santos (once he stays away from the pies) and I wouldn't be too hard on Jenkinson (please God AW didn't intend 9 games in League 1 to be preperation 30 in the Premier).

I'm disappointed in Arteta. He plays even more slowly than most of our midfielders and has yet to do anything to set the pulse racing.

The problem with Arteta is people expect him to be Cesc, for a start he's playing a lot deeper and instead of creating he's keeping things ticking over.

Yes he's slow but so is Alonso who others wanted here, it looks like he will be more Alonso than Fabregas and for me he's not disappointed, its a shame Jack got injured as he may have gone on to be more creative.

Chamberlin has been the stand out signing, funny enough he was the signing most slated but so far he looks the best.

I think Mertesacker will prove to be the best buy, it'll be good to have a decent CB pairing once Vermaelen is back.

I think Arteta and Gervinho will come good too, our full team isn't actually that bad. Benayoun will also be a good squad player too imo.

Can't really say on the others just yet, except that Chamberlain looks good.

---------------Szczesny-------------------
-Sagna-Mertesacker-Vermaelen-Gibbs-
------------------Song---------------------
--------Arteta------------Wilshere---------
-Walcott--------------------------Gervinho
----------------van Persie------------------

Believe Mertesacker will prove his worth as will Arteta,Jenkinson thrown in at deep end unexpectedly :? Chamberlain been excellent so far but the waste of money for me is Gervinho. We already have gervinho's at the club already like Diarby...can't pass, control or shoot and always loses the ball in good positions,£11mill wasted.

Mertesacker for me, i think he's done really well so far considering the manager is doing him no favours.

Arteta seems to struggle to last the 90 minutes.

Alot of people have voted for the ox but its far far too early to say that 12 million was a good piece of business for him. Im hopeful but not gonna get ahead of myself.

None have looked that impressive, however.
I thought Jenkinson played a little better on Sunday and certainly won't be found wanting on effort.
Santos though lacking mobility, looks a no nonesense full back. (reminds me a bit of luzhny)
Mertersacker is better than anything else we have currently available.
Benayoun looks a good bench player and I reckon will score some late goals coming off the bench.
Ox, we haven't seen enough to judge.
Arteta hasn't looked great.
Gervinho has been the biggest disappointment. (be honest he's been shite)
Park has been bought to sell shirts.

I don't think we'll see the best of Mertersacker until he's played alongside Vermaelen, likewise with Arteta and Wilshire. Both new signings were extremely unlucky the best players in the team in their respective positions were injured when they joined.
