Tel at Barca

Post by T.S »

Interesting story from Spain. Apparently Monsieur Henry has been ruled out 'indefinitely' with a back injury and people in Barcelona are none too happy about it. The former Barcelona vice-President has said this; “Somebody must have their ears clipped for this signing. We all know the fitness problems he has had. It should have been done for less than £16million.â€

It may well be a case of Arsene shipping TH out at the right time, certainly last season we saw precious little of the great man of previous seasons.

But what the fuck has a former Vice-President of Barca got to say that's of interest? TH might not have had the smoothest of rides in Spain so far but he's still scored 9 goals in 19 games. And £16m was a snip for Barca, if only given the merchandising profits they can make. I had no problem with selling TH, it was right for him and us, but we should have got +£20m for him, even at the age of 30.

Don't want to jump the gun, but could we order up a large helping of humble pie for all those journo's and pundits who doubted Arsene's mentality

Kind of gives you a warm feeling inside knowing that life after king Henry just keeps getting better and better

I don't think it necessarily matters who said it, be it a current Barcelona president, a former one or a Barcelona fan. The fact is that, and it's been reported in quite a few press reports, that there is growing unrest there because of his fitness and they think they've paid way over the odds for someone who, granted is still an awesome player, but is becoming more and more injury prone.

The key thing here is his Sciatic nerve. My mate Doc J (he's a doctor you know) will tell you there is just no long term come back from a sciatica problem. You can have the surgery, the physiotherapy etc etc but it will always come back (sic) to haunt you - especially if you are doing something as strenuous as playing footy.

Methinks Arsene knew alright. He knew THBW14 was f*cked like a schoolgirl on prom night and got a cool 16 mil for a guy that might just have his career ended prematurely.

Which would be terribly sad in fairness. :(

I'm pleased if that's what they think, it's always nice to feel your club is viewed as having got the best of a deal.

But any criticism of Henry on the basis that he gets injured too often displays a failure to understand the player he's become. We could all see what had been happening over the last 18 months, so I assume scouts, coaches and journalists could too.

Henry probably can't be the number one striker for a top side anymore, but playing in a squad alongside Messi, Ronaldhino, Eto'o and Dos Santos, with Iniesta, Xavi, Gudjonsson etc to provide support and options, he offers Barca plenty. And he's been shipping in the goals and laying on assists, so where's the problem? If they can't see that, it shows how stupid and short-sighted they are, and in my opinion doesn't reflect anything on Henry. And the price is still a bargain!

I think the point is that, if he's not playing and is continuously getting injured, he was not worth the transfer fee. For a similar reason, I would never touch Michael Owen with a barge pole. I don't think anyone's criticising Henry here. I think it's more a case of, from Barcelona's point of view, couldn't that £16 million have been put to better use?

Darren Bent, anyone?

I know I'm twisting your words TS, but sounds like you're suggesting Bent (who I don't think has had a significant injury while at Spurs) is better value than the now injured TH at Barca - you don't mean that .... do you??

Ha! Of course I was joking. Jesus, quite a lot of what I've been saying today is being taken out of context. Not being able to judge tone of voice through text is so annoying!

Anyway, yeah, Darren Bent is useless, Thierry Henry is a great footballer who would be an asset to any team, while fit. And there is the crux (what a word) of the matter. If he is only injured for two weeks, then fair enough, but I have a sneaky feeling that's just Barca putting a positive spin on things. Look how they've fucked up Eto'o's injuries. If for the rest of this season, and next season they don't get much playing time out of him, then it is not money well spent. If they do, then it is money well spent as I have no doubt he will deliver the goods. Simple.

Just please God make him be injured when they inevitably draw us in the Champions League this season!

Agreed, even if he had a broken leg, you just know he'd score a last minute winner.
