John Radford

Post by brazilianGOONER »

i managed to get hold of some old arsenal matches (some of them via monkeymaw here in the forum) and i couldn't help but be very impressed by this lad John Radford who played inside forward. fucking hell, he's like those players that you always know he's gonna get past the defenders - be it with pace, technique, whatever, he seems to have been a monster of a player. scored goals like crazy too.

my question is, why don't i hear more about him? i hear people mentioning a lot of other players from the 60s and 70s but never radford, why is it so? a hat trick when he was 17, 149 goals (4th best scorer in The Arsenal's history), and only 2 england caps?

maybe he played very well in the matches i got but was too inconsistent? why the hell don't i see his name on fans shirts? he really looked, from what i saw (4 or 5 matches) one of the best Arsenal players ever, am I wrong?

cheers! :barscarf: :barscarf:

Arsenal Football Club was formed in 1996 by Arsene Wenger.

I'll get my old man to give you a call. He mentions Radford more in an afternoon than I've mentioned Abou in all of my 3,000+ posts :D

Maybe like me (70's born) people are not as familiar with him as more modern day players.
As your football interest intensifies it is the players you grow up with that you're more familiar with.
My Dad always raved about him, and I've read and seen what I can, so agree with you, a good player, loved to get one of his sort today.
He also used to manage my local club Bishops Stortford for a while.
That greasy haired ex Scum keeper know runs BS.

John Radford does the Legends tours at the Grove.

He said he would have paid to play in the 1971 squad - how many of our current players would say that now?

Jonny Radford I believe is in our top 10 scorers list and helped us win the fairs cup in '70 and our '71 double. In fact he should get a lot more credit than George and even McLintock or Graham in my book, he was scoring bucketloads back when we were shit in the mid sixties too , and he is hardly remembered :?

Superb striker, best header of a ball i have seen in an Arsenal shirt and brilliant on the deck.He started off as winger then moved to centre forward. His partnership with Ray Kennedy was like a double act.For many years he was Arsenals 2nd greatest scorer only to be overtaken by the legends that are Wrighty and Henry no shame in that

To me he is a bigger legend than Charlie George

He benefitted greatly from the service provided by George Armstrong a winger that could land a cross ball on a sixpence. ( another old player that doesn't get the praise he deserved ) Radford was a dangerous forward that could hold up the ball and score the full lot, left foot right foot and of course headers. His two games for England at Wembley were not successful because of the way Ramsey played with his wingless wonders . I saw his last game against Switzerland I think there were only half a dozen crosses throughout the whole match most of which were from him as he was played wide right. At the Arsenal though he scored for fun and linked with Kennedy to form a forward pair I wouldn't mind having now.
