The disappearence of ex-Arsenal legends!
After the parade of legends before the Everton fixture for the 125 celebrations it got me thinking of the lack of media and club associations some of our finest players down the years have and the disappointing effect this has.
Dennis Bergkamp, arguably our finest ever player, yet rarely makes public comment or appearances at Arsenal leaving a sense that he has forgotten the club. The same can arguably be said for Tony Adams even at the statue unveiling he failed to appear. While David Seaman, Sol Campbell, Freddie Ljungberg, Lauren (albeit he was at the 125 celebrations), Kanu, Patrick Vieira (who associates himself with City) and Marc Overmars can all be considered as falling into this bracket of being fine, top quality Arsenal players yet have never remained in and around the club!

What the f@ck do people want ? These guys gave their all for the club when the wore the shirt, always state in media interviews how much they love the club. Its obvious how much Arsenal means to them. But if they aren't knocking about the place every week, or dont show for certain media events which are essentially club promotions, then some people on here feel they shouldnt be called legends or dont feel for AFC ?!!? Give them a break ffs.
I dont care if they turned up at the celebrations or come out every other day in the media saying how great the club is.Its what they did on the pitch for us that counted. So what if PV4 works for City.Is he supposed to sit at home watching videos of the Invincible season all day?.I remember TA6 for being our greatest captain ever not that he wasnt at the final game at Highbury or an unvieling of a statue.Move on

Isnt TA6 still managing out in asia ? If so I assume that would prevent him attending on saturday I would assume. By the same token isnt Bergkamp a coach at ajax still and as they had a game yesterday I would have presumed his priorities would have been there. That being said I do wonder if there has been some falling out between TA6 and the club cos he never makes an appearance at any of these events and as a former club captain he would be a player who know better than most about what it meant back then to represent the club

My standing on the issue differs slightly though from donaldo's for a change - I feel that if a club and it's fans are honouring a former player then the least they can do is show up (if possible) to show their appreciation and allow the fans to return the favour. Sometimes players feel under appreciated and treated like a piece of meat (especially when they are leaving or have left the club) but this was a show of recognition and appreciation for their efforts whilst employed by our club and that shouldnt be understated or disregarded. I have said already that I am not 100% behind the idea of legend statues (on the basis of how it might be perceived as a snub by those who havent got a statue) and I certainly am opposed to doing it mid season but I fully support the bringing back of all the legends and making a fuss of them with the crowd(especially for the jcl's who wouldnt have known half of them

I think 'family reasons' is a euphenism for jumped before he was pushed as the side are stuggling.
No sign of our dictator doing the same then ?

I agree with Augie in that DB10 would have had work commitments with Ajax.arseofacrow wrote:I'm not sure how these players should remain "in and around" the club. What should they be doing?
As for Tony, well, he's an odd one anyway.

He still pops by and attends when he can as he has a box in the North-West corner.
But yes - Adams is an odd ball.
I do find it strange that he never attends events or even testimonials etc...
Seems as if he does want to distance himself from the club.

Bergkamp couldn't as he has Ajax commitments. Adams claims he is still in charge of Gabala FC and was unable to attend due to commitments there, not sure how true that is. Considering he did interviews for the Telegraph and the Everton programe this weekend It does blur the waters somewhat, I think he still loves the Arsenal but would love to see him back at the stadium of his own accord sometime.
