Who is the last decent signing made by wenger ?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Who is the last decent signing made by wenger ?

Post by Non flying Dutchman »

Apart from Arteta (subjective perhaps, but he's quality imho) and Koscielny our other signings have been "average" at best.

It make my bloody head hurt :banghead: that the chavs now have Mata and Cahill (He's hardly super quality, but better than the lumbering german)

I am not sure I trust the current regimes judgement anymore

Not sure why I am posting this, just pissed off and fed up

The August package deal

Mertesacker
Arteta
Santos
Benayoun
Park - not sure about this one as hasn't played in the PL yet but I still think he is super quality :D

Park is one for the future .. but he embodies the super quality that Wenger always refers to ..

If we accept your assertion that Arteta and Kos have been good signings then I think AW had done OK, although both were subjected to a lot of abuse on this forum for their early performances (including from me).

Arteta started off in a more advanced position but didn't play well, imo he has added a lot now that AW has dropped him a bit deeper.
Kos was vilified for a long time on these pages and now people are praising him.

Most top clubs (Citeh excepted) only make two or three signings a year usually with mixed success (Torres, Downing, Carroll, Henderson, Lukaku, Jones, Nasri etc).

imo AW's weakness has been, over a number of years, to fail to recognise the teams shortcomings quickly enough to be able to bring players in early enough to settle in and perform.

arteta is a great player. but agreed, wenger's signings have been well below par, specially attacking players. don't remember the last good attacker (striker or attacking mid) he bought us. i don't think nasri counts, neither does arshavin.

at least he learned to buy centrebacks (verminator and koscielny are class)

Koscielny is an excellent defender - he almost single handedly got us something out of the Fulham game and has done brilliantly in a defence that has chopped and changed around him - including moving positions himself.

Take VP out of it, far and away our best player this season.

Wenger is correctly getting some stick - but got to give credit for this one.

Vermaelen and Sagna, Kos is good now but he had his moments, Sagna and Vermaelen hit the ground running and have kept it up.

Arteta. I would have loved this signing last year rather than this summer. I think that he divides opinion, but I think that he is class - tough tackler and can play a decent ball as well.

Definitely Vermaelen. Can't help but feel he got lucky with that one though...

How was the last decent signing made by Wenger?
There's been several "decent" signings, but that's the problem - we used to have a world class team, now we have a "decent" one.

But Stan's happy, as we keep making a "decent" profit every fucking year

Arteta and Kos have been the standouts, Arteta was a no brainer really but Kos was somewhat of a risk by Arsene which has paid off.

Before that. TV5

In an odd way, Wenger's defensive purchases have been pretty good.

Out of the 93m spent in the last 4 seasons I think the following are decent:

Arteta (10m)
Vermaelen (10m)
Kos (10m) (Although still not sure, sometimes think he only ends up looking great because others around him play poorly)

The other 63m could have been spent a lot better IMO. As for the last great signings I'd say Sagna & Nasri in 2007.
