Now is the time for Wenger's ‘golden generation’... (Jan 25)
usual thread starter... this one was submitted before the first leg at the lane by the way.
I have to say that this view really annoys me. The underlying point seems to be that Wenger should stop messing around picking kids and buy big so that we can compete with Chelsea and Man United today. Another offspring of this view is that we should stop pussying around and "win ugly".
There are so many things wrong with this point of view that it's hard to know where to start, but here's a few:
1. Arsenal play the best football in England, and maybe (on our day) in Europe. If you'd rather we played like Chelsea then I feel sorry for you.
2. Arsenal cannot compete for players against Chelsea and Man United. We may get to the same level as ManU in 10 years, but definitely not now. So, we can't pay £30million for a ready made complete player who will instantly make us a better team.
3. Wenger has never liked buying "stars" and prefers to spot unrecognised (or unrealised) talent and turn them into stars. This has provided us gooners with some of the best players ever to grace an Arsenal shirt (Henry, Vieira, Petit, Fabregas, etc, etc) and has always made it easier to blend the new players into the "Arsenal" (read: "Arsene's") way.
4. Watching Arsene's kids develop is an absolute joy and, as an Away Scheme member, watching the sheer joy and commitment, as well as the skill, of our boys over the course of this Carling Cup run has been fantastic.
5. This view that Wenger doesn't care about the Carling Cup is idiocy - he's a winner and wants to win every game we play. He uses the Carling Cup to blood the youngsters, because when else would they play? As well as giving the seniors a much needed rest. We saw the dangers on wednesday night when Alex and Eboue both came on (and changed the game) and got crocked.
So, all in all, I would rather watch our team than any other in the land. We have the greatest manager in the world, a great new stadium (OK, it needs a bit more personalising), a fantastic young team playing great football, challenging for every competition. Realistically, we may not have the resource to win the league for a few years, but we'll have great fun trying!
Wake up and be thankful for what we've got. When Wenger leaves, we will think back to this period as the greatest in Arsenal's history.

Amen!
Remember the Man U that so tragically disappeared in a plane crash, their average age was 22 and they won the Premiership.
The golden era is now and tomorrow.
Today we have the best team to watch , tomorrow we will have the best team to support...the winning team!
And as far as I know we haven't lost anything yet, we are int he FA , Carling and Champion's League still so what is all the panic about.
I'll tell you something to panic about : "Old Man" Platini is president of the UEFA and he will bring down the number of English teams in the Champion's league from 4 to 3 so we'd better get in the top 3 if we don't want to be in the Scum's boots next year!
His election also means that the possible use of video in football has gone right down the toilet!
