Brendan Rodgers' career. RIP

Post by Top Londoner »

Becoming manager of a once, great football club is going to put his career back some years. A promising manager who will suffer worse than Hodgson did during his tenure.
For the life of me, I cannot imagine why he thinks this is the next move for him.
Good luck, but it's doomed to fail.

So would Paul Lambert.

I was in Norfolk last season and chatted with a lot of Norwich supporters, and a smattering of Ipswich, (Tractor boyz) supporters.
The general consensus was that Lambert could make a better fist of it at Arsenal, than the present incumbent.
Some, gasp, even suggested that Lambert would be our next manager.
Oh, the cheek of it.

Still think that if the scousers were going down the "up and coming manager" route then they would have been better going with martinez who has more experience and achieved more 8)

Tbh. I shall have a saver on Betfair for the Rodgers not to see out the season there.
The board don't have a clue. They listen to the supporters and get rid of Roy, then appoint King Kenny and hand him £100m. He is given insufficient time to mould his squad.
What are the chances for any new manager there, unless he is promoted from within?

Can't see this working to be honest.
They were reluctant to appoint Dalglish and eventually gave in letting him squander a lot of money. Now they are appointing a guy who plays tippy tappy footie. Can't see him lasting but stranger things have happened.

I would rate Lambert as a better manager and surprised they didn't go for him.

Following up Daglish is the big problem.

Despite Daglish finishing a lowly 8th place, Brendan won't be getting the you'll never walk alone courtesy treatment. They didn't like Roy because he wasn't big enough plus the defensive football. Brendan will be ok in terms of the style, but if the wins dont come he will be accused of being too small for the job, and that will happen quickly.

Shame I like Brendan and his style of play, hopefully he'll give liverpool a reailty check that trying to relive the historic days is very misguided, look forwards not backwards.

Really thought they were gonna get Martinez who i thought would have been a good signing for them. Rodgers will be hounded out within 6 months I reckon.

crazy move. if he'd kept Swansea up one more year, he could of taken over a better club in 2014 and left them in a good position financially.

i'd bet swans will go down, and rodgers will be back there in 2014 lol.

My reservation with Brendan Rodgers is that while undoubtedly improving Swansea, the foundations were put down by Martinez. It may have been one of those things where everything just falls into place at the right time between a club and a manager.

Not convinced he can go into a big club, especially an under-performing one, and put his own stamp on it. Still, only one way to find out. Good luck to him

strange choice for liverpool.one season in the pl and now the pressure job could ruin the man, martinez will be a great manager for someone someday but not sure about rodgers.

My point exactly - swansea were a club treading water until they appointed martinez and he got them a promotion and very much laid the foundations for where they are today. That being said, rodgers will be a loss to them cos mentally losing your manager to a bigger club has to shake players belief and confidence in the club and will bring the size and ambition of the club really into focus.

I hope that I am wrong but think that martinez has made a huge mistake staying with wigan - in my opinion he has kept them up against the odds twice (and playing good footie as well 8) ) so really there is nothing more that he can do there and a relegation will def stain the image of a manager whose star is def rising at the moment. Maybe going to the scousers wasnt the right move right now but going to a club like villa (position open), everton (might well open up this summer if moyes gets nabbed in the managerial merry go round) or even the scum (if twitcher goes to the chavs) should be his objective instead of pledging his future to wigan

i think rodgers has weighed this up and probably felt that he couldn't turn it down.

As well as he's done, he wasn't the first manager to bring a team up through the play offs, or keep them in the top division. the foundations around the club and the team were pretty good, and his contacts through chelsea certainly helped him.

It isn't beyond the realms of possibility that swansea get relegated next season, and rodgers disappears for a few years or worse.

I think that he is taking this opportunity now as he doesn't know how often it will in his career. He is untarnished at the moment, but that tends to erode over time more than become enhanced.

And as for him taking on liverpool, whichever way you look at it they are huge club, worldwide fanbase and history. They may have been a bit of a basket case recently, and perhaps still are, but it is still one of the biggest challenges around.

Rodgers likes his teams to press hard when not in possession and play patient possession-football from the back when they've got it.
I look forward to the delicate skills of Skrtel and Carragher trying to playing precision passes from the back, Henderson playing the Xavi role and Adams working hard to win the ball back.
It will be an interesting first few months of the season, especially as much of the squad won't be there at the start of pre-season due to the Euros.
