Congratulations matey but I dread to think what insurance premiums he (or most probably you) will have to pay to actually get him on the road. I'm struggling to find a quote of less than £430 - despite having driven for over 27 years, never picking up a single penalty point in that time and having 8 year Protected No Claims Bonus!! And I've only got a fecking Ford Escort 1300 that's over 13 years old!!

They source different companies.

Tried the AA but they're even more expensive - nearly £700!!! I doubt the car is worth even half that amount. Now I know that living in a high crime area like Hackney there is a bit of an additional price on top but these insurers are taking the piss!!

I'll give your other recommendation a ring tomorrow but I'm not any more hopeful of getting a decent deal. Thanks anyway.

I've been with Esure for many years. I've looked for cheaper. But haven't found a better deal.

I would never check out the Go Compare site. I wouldn't want to give my business to any company which annoys the shit out of me with their crappy adverts featuring a fat opera singer.

It must be a nightmare for people who have recently passed the test. They are an unknown to the the insurance companies (glorified bookies) and are screwed into paying huge premiums. Some will take the chance of driving without insurance. Bad news for everyone.

Congratulations to your son mate

Last month my insurance was up for renewal, so I was looking around online and this company called me up asked if he could give me a quote to which I agreed. On the phone for ages talking through all the details then he goes 'a quote hasn't come up so I'll go try get a competitive one and get back to you in about 30 mins'

30 mins later he calls me and says I've got a quote for you. The premium is £2500, the voluntary excess is £1500 and the compulsory excess is £1000.

Bearing in mind he knows the car is worth about £5k, I thought he was messing about. I said you do realise if I have an accident and the car is written off I will get £0 back. He was like 'oh yeah I didn't see it like that, so you don't want to take up the offer?'

I just hung up. So thick. This was with 5 years No claims as well
