Sorry disagree with that Frank. You see Laurent is being damned by you for being one of the most improved players in the game. When he came he was a bit cart horsey but after a very good spell of games for Arsenal and having a great game against the Spanish for France.....he deserves rewarding for his efforts and I'd rather give him a decent contract that prevents the issues we have each summer with our marquee players.

Here is hoping to the building, albeit slowly, of a solid defence.

Yes, agree, but why 5 years? :? :? Too much too soon, just like alot of the players, i.e. the ones who are shit, were known to be shit to everyone bar Wenger and now we can't get rid off. He should be given a 3 year deal NOT a 5 year one imo and I'm not damning him at all, I'm querying the length of the contract NOT that he shouldn't be given one!!

3 or 5 years so what? Contracts ain't worth the paper they are written on, I guess it secures a transfer fee for two years more should he become a world class top notch defender and Barcelona and Man City come a calling

5 years doesn't bother me, if we really want to get rid we'll sell him before then and if he wants to go then likewise. I don't buy into him being a flash in the pan, plenty of defenders have had poor first seasons before going on to be quality. We need consistency in our defence and that's what he's given us this year, both in terms of presence and performance. I don't blame him for the incompetence of those around him or our defensive tactics as a whole.
