The "I was wrong" thread

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The "I was wrong" thread

Post by SteveO 35 »

Following on from the "told you so" thread, it has been suggested that we should have a thread where we admit we were wrong. Lets see if we can get through a whole page without references to Baba this time eh?

Anyway, here we go

Unlike some, I didn't jump to conclusions about TH14 or DB10 early doors. I genuinely thought they would always make it. However, when we lost our opening game of the 2000/01 season up at Sunderland, I was fuming that we brought on some lightweight with ten-to-two feet who looked like he was made from paper. His name? Robert Pires

Of the present lot, I am happy to say that I slated Koscielny big time and he had a fine season last year. However, it seems to have gone into reverse this season with people having said how good he is, and he's actually been shit in the last couple of games. I'm not sure Mertesacker's 3 good games are the basis for saying "I was wrong" but if he sees out the season playing like he did at City he will have proved me wrong.

Now, over to you lot

I thought Jenkinson was nothing more than a league 1 player and although its still early days im happy he's proving me wrong so far. I also thought Kosceilny was shit but again last season he was a far better player than i ever thought he could be.

I had one post that I got completely wrong.
That RvP would start this season for us as captain.

Bummer. :banghead:

I thought g88ner was an intelligent bloke. Turns out he's a retard. :(

I thought Legohead was class when he made his first couple appearances for us. Thought "this guy and Cecsc are going to dominate the PL for years!" Turned out Legohead couldn't dominate a gimp that has been sedated, tied down and, indeed, just died.

Yeah, thinking about it the other way round.....when I first saw Glenn Helder I thought he was going to be the flair player that would light up GG's dying boring midfield. He scored a couple I think in the home game against Norwich and did a couple of showboat tricks that had me thinking we'd signed a genius. I can't remember how many games he played after that but he disappeared into the horizon faster than you can say Quincy Owusu-Abeyie :D

After we destroyed Liege in "The McGolderick Game" I thought we had signed a genius and could really see why the other players had allegedly nicknamed him "Snowey". :o

Turned out old Eddie was shitter than Billabongalong Song. :x

Absolutely slated Gibbs continuously until the start of this season. Never saw him as a decent left-back because I felt his positioning was even worse than Clichy's and he was a complete shitout and liability. Happy to see he's (so far this year) proving me wrong by adapting to become a cog in a solid defensive machine (at times!) and also offering far more going forward than we have from full-back since Cole.

Yep. That's all fine. Until he gets his annual long-term injury... :(

I was one of many who were outraged that seaman was bought to displace johnny lukic - I still prefer mad jens over both of them but I do have to acknowledge that he was an upgrade on lukic (except from long distance free kicks  )

Reyes, manninger and vela are 3 other disappointments for me - I still believe that to different degree's wenger fcuked them all about but neither reyes or manninger have set the world alight since leaving us either :(

I will also acknowledge that I didnt fully appreciate bob pires until he was gone - I knew that he was a good footballer but sometimes his french arrogance and his unwillingness to get involved in a physical battle used to wind me up

Pires's French arrogance? Or his French style Augie? :D

I thought Jay Simpson would be a regular squad player for a few years, until he went on loan to QPR when it became clear he would not play much for us.

I thought Paul Dickov would be the new Brady.

I thought Djourou would be a fixture for us either at centre back or in defensive midfield.
