burnett is a taff. all taffs look similar...robert croft, that snooker player, burnett...!
darts sold it soul when all the hangers on joined in. it used to be fantastic when it was at the good old circus tavern, ali pali is simply to big and too full of morons. when darts was on 2-3 times a year it was an event, sky have 'popularised' it and diluted it so for me its just meh nowadays. still its nice to head up to the uk open in bolton and the matchplay in blackpool and pull some dirty northern slags in reflex!

It's that extra popularity that's brought the prize money in though, which has meant so many players can make a career out of darts now. In turn that's improved the standard immensely. It's now a genuinely phenomenal sport.the playing mantis wrote:burnett is a taff. all taffs look similar...robert croft, that snooker player, burnett...!

Re: Darts
dont get me wrong, im not talking about the bad old bdo days, they are truly gash, PDC darts is a million times better than that - im talking about the move of the worlds to the ali pali. darts had got big and had big prize money the last few years the worlds were at the circus. There were plenty of big tournaments then, with big money, the move to the ali pali and current oversatturation has gone too far.
sure going to the darts isnt all about the darts maybe its 50% the rest is for the booze/banter/occasion. but now at ali pali ui would say for the majority of the crowd they are not there for the darts, and if they are only 5-10% of their trip is for the darts. the reasons they are there, as its seen as a popular thing to do now, supposedly 'in', to say they have been, to get on tv, and to get smashed (the last reason is one i go for but that was along with actually being interested in the arrows and knowing whats going on).
the added revenue from moving to the ali pali and being on sky everyweek has made little impact in the improved product on offer imo, as the product on offer was already excellent and had the best players in it. i think u are incorrect in saying the added popularity has made it what it is, i think the pdc had reached a level where a lot of players could make a living out of it anyway, before the return to ali pali and PL darts every week on sky.

The increased exposure by sky has lead to further sponsorship and in turn to the PDC circuit . Without Barry Hearn darts would be dead as it was in the mid to late 80's. As it is players have competitions most weeks with a first prize of £12,000. Also MVG picked up £60,000 for his recent major win.
