INVINCIBLES OR CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE?

Post by goonersid »

Would you swap the invincibles season to have won the clge on that fateful night in Paris? I would, because even if we ever do go on to win the clge, it will be tarnished by the Chavs being the first London club to win it.

Yes, but it would have given Wenger even more power? It would have also given him more leeway than he's already got in pursuing his personal vanity project!

It would have been worth it. That team was incredible and deserved to win the European Cup. A travesty they didn't. I cried for about 3 hours that night. I was gutted. I have never seen as much of a second of that match again and I never will.

CL. Invincibles was absolutely amazing but we would have still been a great team and achieved fantastic things in that time without winning the league unbeaten. Losing that final meant we ended up with fuck all when we could have had so much.

2006 was two years too late. The great team was on the way down.Wengers biggest failure will always be he never won the CL particulary with the teams of 2002-04

2004 was our year. I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it. We bottled it against Chelsea after 3 wins and a draw away from home so far that season, we would have fucking pissed all over Monaco and Porto.

My thoughts exactly, we had the best team in Europe by a country fucking mile, yet were being knocked out of the clge by the likes of the chavs and valencia, with the help of a thing called tactics.

Invincibles for me because I don't believe it will ever be achieved again. I was totally gutted in 06 after Paris but I wouldn't swap the invincible season for anything..(although in a few more season I might be glad to swap it for a Capital One Cup ) ..I was also gutted that we lost to Chelsea in 04 Champions League quarter final. In hindsight we were as close to winning it then as we can ever be. If we got over Chelsea I think we wouldn't have been stopped. I also think 06 was the first signs that Wenger was on the wane. his post-match press conference was very ungracious. The occasion deserved better.

Maybe back then I would have preferred the champs league but I doubt it cos I have always prioritised our own domestic league over the champions league and the invincibles will hopefully never be equalled. As has been said already, I no longer give a fcuk about winning the champs league cos the chavs becoming the first london team to win it sully's it's prestige for me although there were a few on here that celebrated their success     :banghead: :banghead:

Tbh the champions league has lost a lot of it's integrity when it changed to become the cash cow that it now is - I preferred it when it was champions battling against champions over two legs instead of a super league for the bigger european countries who then "allow" a few minnows in as a way of fobbing off the smaller nations

Agree with Rodders here, an absolute gut punch of a result.

This mostly. ^^

It's a shit competition now and has been from the moment they allowed non-champions into it. The old cup competition format was vastly superior. The chavs winning it before us was truly sickening but I still want us to win it even just once to put that particular hole in the trophy cabinet to bed.

We blew it big time in 04. We should have won it. Our strongest team in the competitions weakest year.

But 2006 was one of my darkest experiences as a Gooner of 40+ years. Dennis's last season, the guts of the Invincibles team still together, the last year at Highbury. We were destined. And I had a ticket for the final. It was our destiny. And then that gobshite in nets gets sent off and then THBW14 fluffed two chances he'd have put away with his eyes closed any other night... Christ it still haunts me.

But I'd take the Invincibles above the CL anyday.

I too can't watch it and haven't since that night in Paris. I'm fucking traumatised by it.

Dennis Bergkamp, the greatest ever footballer and human being in the world, has not got a CL winner's medal - but fucking inbred slackjaw Phil Neville and arsehole features Teddy the Bench Cuntingham both do?? We should have nuked the entire fucking world the day after the 2006 CL final. Mankind does not deserve to live. :(
