Next years Reduced budget

Post by lowerwest »

Anyone else noticed in the press and so on the sudden realisation that we might not make top 4 next season and that all those names we have been spuriously linked with wont want to come (even if they did in the first place). I predict a recurring theme to come will be-you know that money we never used to spend...its just been halved.

Liverpool and Spurs have all tried to spend their way into the top 4 but we wont follow that course.

£70m seems to be a recurring figure. We can say £700m if we like because it won't be spent.

Yes the recurring 70m. Well i am presuming thats for transfer fees as well as wages so suddenly i dont think it will be buying a whole hill of beans to be honest. Not only that but that figure will be significantly reduced if we dont get top 4. And yes we have a manager who thinks he is very clever creating a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Its very difficult to look at the current situation with any positivity. Was thinking last night who decent is around in the reserves or equivalent and then i see the U21 team is second bottom with 3 points? Whats going on there//

Don't forget the cost of the contracts granted to the 4 English players + Ramsey was quoted as £70m, you can bet that will be quoted as part of the spent 'transfer fund' even though the cost will be spread over 5 years.
More smoke and mirrors.

I wonder if people will still label us as the best-run club when it becomes painfully obvious that our (non-competing) model is reliant on CL football, unlike Spurs and even Liverpool who waste money on wages even more than we do!

Agreed our model relies on CL football-what happens if we fall out?

I guess the club is prepared and it wouldn't be that much of a blow IF it happens once.
Now the big problem is that if Tottenham finishes in the Top4 THEY will have extra money and CL football to attract top class players to strengthen a squad that already finished above Arsenal so it would be very hard for Arsenal to get back into the Top4.
If it happens twice in a row it could lead to a very rapid decline and it could take a long time to come back.

If our budget is halved does that mean we only have to make say 10mil profit instead of 20

The club has always said we could cope with ONE season without CL football. But as both of us have said Spurs would have extra money from being in CL that they don't need to satisfy outgoings and could therefore quite feasibly strengthen significantly. Whereas there's no way we'll invest significantly particularly if we finish 5th or below.

It's quite conceivable to see us being out of the CL for a few years. It's just like when they drew up the financial plan they were completely oblivious to the fact that decimating our playing squad could lead to this...

Good point about Spurs strenghtening if they get into the top 4 at our expense - it would indeed make getting into the top 4 next year even more difficult. Wenger is obviously going to get away with finishing outside the top 4 this season, but if that happened next season as well I think there would be panic behind the scenes. Of course you would still get the obscene spin from Gazidis and the club's P.R Department, but there would be real anxiety behind the scenes, and I would be amazed if AW was offered a new contract. It will take 2 seasons outside the top 4 to get the club to change their policies, and if that's what it takes to effect change, then so be it. Not bothered who takes 4th provided of course it is not our neighbours up the road - couldn't stand it.

I'm sure I have read somewhere that the new 30M per season sponsorship deal from Emirates is dependent on champions league qualification, if we fail to qualify the amount we get is reduced and I would imagine that it would be significantly less. This on top of the loss of champions league revenue coupled with lower attendances/season ticket renewals, will have a big impact on club finances. I don't buy this "we have factored in non qualification" crap it's just a smoke screen.
You can bet you bottom dollar if we do not qualify, that will be the excuse they need to stop any major investment in the team....

Yes, it is:

Funny how the sponsors can think about results-based deals but the board can't or won't do the same with Wenker.

Wouldn't it be great if the players and management all had that same clause....that we pay them a percentage less if they don't perform!

As for attracting players, I think its bullshit that they won't come to a club who can't promise them Champions League. Didn't Bayern sign Ribery after failing to qualify? And Suarez hasn't exactly played a lot of CL football at Liverpool....and haven't that shite down the Seven Sisters Road not signed the odd "star" name despite being in our shadow for so long!

I think players are attracted by ambition and by the Wonga, more than by the promise of participating in a competition that we have zero hopes of ever winning....
