Andy Linighan

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Absolutely wesome in the air, gave me one of the very best moments of my life
did so after a vicious swinging (unpunished) Mark Bright elbow broke two of his fingers on the way to shattering his nose
when I got back from Wembley I watched the recording of that crap game at least twice
the post match interview with him was quite disgustingly snotty

Santi is totally two footed
Andy was genuinely no footed

now is a plumber, in Essex I think, his van says:
Andy Linighan, average footballer, world class plumber

I think that's quality.

Didn't he have something like 7 brothers playing pro football?

couple of brothers played for Norwich I think, he was a bit unlucky because at the time George graham was buying centre backs like they were going out of fashion and he did have adams and bould in front of him, did he get an England cap :?: because I remember at the time Ireland asked him to play but not sure why or how he never became an eire player.

Back then we asked everyone to play regardless of talent, if you came to Ireland on a stag weekend you were qualified to
Play, happy days

As has been said already, linighan was average but the guy scored the winning goal in injury time of a cup final after having his nose splattered all over his face after a vicious assualt by mark bright
Andy's contribution to our results when TA6 was on holidays at her majesty's pleasure shouldnt be underestimated either 8)

Always be remembered for covering for TA in 91 and the cup final winner in 93 with a broken hooter

Not the best a decent back up but much better than some of the shite Wenger has had at CB in the last few years

I didn't like him when he joined, I saw him score the goal at Wembley and still didn't like him, and everything I've heard about him since he retired (See most ex-Gooners' autobiographies) makes me like him even less.

This. 8) And let me add that, unlike the current centre-backs, he wasn't afraid to put his head on the ball or in the way, at a time when it was much harder and the game much more physical!! :barscarf:

It's easy to compare the current defenders with the old school defenders like Linighan but it's also a tad unfair I think. The current defenders are asked to fill a far more dificult role in the team, as they are required to play the ball out of defence rather than just clear their lines. The likes of Linighan etc were allowed to "Row Z" it far more than would be tolerated by Wenger nowdays. Defending was a simpler art in Linighan's day. Not a negative critique of Linighan but context is everything.

For me, he was a good defender, not a great one, but I'll always love him for scoring a winner in the FA cup final whilst playing on with a smashed nose. Can you imagine a modern day player staying on with that type of injury and then putting their head in where it hurts? They'd be too busy on their way to Harley Street and then tweeting about it.
