Jeffers interview
Interesting
http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/intervi ... 40020.html
highlights:
“Lots of people say I never had the best of careers. But if, at the age of seven when I was playing in the streets of Liverpool, the only place you could play football, you would have said you will play for Everton, Arsenal and England, I would have definitely taken that. I have played in some big games, in some magnificent stadiums.
“I’ve underachieved massively. I should have had a better career. But a footballer needs luck and lot of things to go their way.”
“I had got a bad ankle injury at Everton and got it operated on before I went to Arsenal that summer. It was never quite right. I needed another ankle operation after my first season and was struggling to get into the team.
“With the players there — [Dennis] Bergkamp, [Thierry] Henry, [Sylvain] Wiltord, Kanu — it was difficult to get a run in the team. I was just a young lad and the players at Arsenal were a lot bigger stars than at Everton. I was No9 and getting changed next to Berkgamp, No10, Freddie Ljungberg was the other side, Patrick Vieira not too far away.”
Wenger’s job has since become a lot more difficult with no trophy for eight years but Jeffers is certain his former boss has not lost his touch. “He is still doing a magnificent job. When I went to Arsenal, there were World Cup winners and a lot of experience: David Seaman, Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Ray Parlour, Martin Keown were regulars and they were 30 plus. It is a totally different side now, a lot more youth.”

Think he actually managed to score in my oldest sons first Arsenal match v Bolton...
Re: Jeffers interview
Was quality for Everton and I remember feeling really excited when he signed for us. Such a shame it didn't work out.

Usually seemed to be half a second off the pace when he came to us, ankle problems could legitimately explain that.

Fox in the box.
Real shame.
I had more foxes with attitude in my back garden in Leytonstone.
Big shame, as I really wanted to see nhim succeed with us.
Good honest interview though.

Re: Jeffers interview
I remember RP7 summing up what was (then) required of an Arsenal player - with reference to Frannie -
"talent is not enough"
Should be stuck up/pinned/posted/engraved throughout the club.
Or tattooed into someone's arm perhaps?

Re: Jeffers interview
Have to be honest and say I never really got what all the fuss was about tbh. He was a good-ish striker that did well at Everton (and had a few exceptional games) but when we signed him I was very "meh" about it. Nothing against him personally but I honestly never thought he had the touch, the footballing brain or speed of thought and feet to interact in the box with the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires or Freddie.
Then he turned out to be a glass legged forerunner for Diaby...

Re: Jeffers interview
His goals to games ratio at Everton was rermarkable, i think it was something like 17 in 14 games the season before we signed him. There was a hint of what was to come though in those stats and I don't mean the no of goals.DB10GOONER wrote:Have to be honest and say I never really got what all the fuss was about tbh. My worry was always his injuries, though in hindsight those stats did flatter him and he turned out to be shite

Re: Jeffers interview
A complete waste of money. We had Henry Bergkamp Kanu and Wiltord at the club already. The summer we signed him Wenger signed 7 players only one was a success and that was Sol.Jeffers turned out to be the forerunner to Diaby and Rosicknote

Are you trying to question Wenger's eye for talent?

He scored 2 last night for accrington stanley, first one was a quality finish
I always wanted him to do well, I just think his injuries and maybe attitude held him back.

Re: Jeffers interview
I always want every fucker we sign to do well. No agenda, don't care who they are, where they come from, who signed them. Just want them to deliver for The Arsenal. But I cannot tolerate lazy fuckers. Lacking the skill is one thing, but lazy fuckers need a shoe-ing.LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:He scored 2 last night for accrington stanley, first one was a quality finish![]()

Re: Jeffers interview
One thing I remember reading about jeffers was that his team mates at Arsenal used to say what a brilliant football player he was especially in his movement in training, maybe he just froze being at a big club when he took to the field.
I believe that there have been a few players down the years that had the talent and fitness to be very good players at Arsenal but the nerves just got the better of them.
Stepanovs immediately springs to mind
