Meagre Pickings
Meagre Pickings
Two games left in another disastrous season and there are two teams already relegated with 5 other teams fighting to stay up so is there any players amongst those teams that we would like to see at the mighty Arsenal ? We would all love to see us compete for europe's top players but the reality is that nowadays our transfer funds are being used to line the pockets of the most overpaid c.unts in football
For me there are 2 or 3 geordie players that could improve us (cisse and either debouchy/santon if sagna leaves) remy at qpr has been mooted by many whilst Cesar might be the much needed experienced keeper we all crave so is there any players amongst those teams that ye feel would be "worth a punt" ?

Re: Meagre Pickings
Definitely Cesar.
Debuchy if Sagna leaves as expected - don't think there are that many great right-backs available and otherwise we'll probably just rely on Jenkinson and I don't think he's ready.
If we're going to continue to not employ proper tactics (i.e. Wenger stays in charge) then I'd take Samba even though he's a mercenary as he's a colossus at his best and that type of dominating/body-on-the-line game is what tends to work best in a shambolic disorganised defence.
I rate Sessegnon quite highly but I'd be worried he'd be far too inconsistent - although if he was brought in and Gervinho forced out I'd be very happy.

Re: Meagre Pickings
As with all transfers into the club, the deal has to be weighed up considering which player would be replaced, and transfer fee.
So with what I suggest as a reasonable fee estimate, and an upgrade replacement, I nominate:
Probables:
Loic Remy from QPR to replace Andrei Arshavin - £8M.
We get a powerful player who can play wide left or up front, and who is already living in London and speaks English.
(Besides, he is our unofficially "most linked" player ever!)
Julio Cesar from QPR to replace Fabianski in goal.
No brainer! - £10M.
Possibles:
Papisse Cisse from Newcastle to replace Gervinho.
Similar to Remy, though far less prolific this season than last.
Think it could take £10 - 12M to prise him away though.
Jean André Emanuel Beausejour Coliqueo from Wigan.
Could be an option in left midfield, as we are already fairly well stocked left back.
A squad player, cheaper replacement for Arshavin (or if Gervinho leaves) than Remy?
- £5.5M
Stéphane Sessègnon from Sunderland.
Possibly Wenger's idea of a replacement for Diaby?
£5M.
Cheick Tiote from Newcastle.
A budget option for a ball winning midfielder, though probably not the quality we need?
£5M
Yohan Cabaye from Newcastle.
A capable if not top level Diaby replacement, though might command a fee higher than his ability?
£11M

Re: Meagre Pickings
Fucking none of them ! They've been relegated for a reason
I guarantee you that six months after signing wonderboy Remy everyone on here will be moaning like fuck about what another Joe Average substandard French import he his, and as for Newcastle.....funny how their wonderful signings from Ligue 1 have managed to drag them into the relegation mire.
I'd rather save the money than waste any of it on the shit that's been relegated
I also seem to remember being the voice of reason when kicking machine & general lump Tiote was being touted as a £20m footballer last season. Quartz's valuation is nearer the mark but the fact remains he is a poor man's Song and one that would be suspended every other week and found wanting in the CL.
Ben Arfa shows glimpses of class and ability wise is streets ahead of any other player getting relegated....but another enigma in the Walcott / Rosicky / Arshavin bracket is not what we need

Re: Meagre Pickings
I like the look of Wigan's James McCarthy. Very solid midfielder.
Re: Meagre Pickings
I second this, if it's newcastle that goes down then Debuchy, cabaye and HBA.1989 wrote:I like the look of Wigan's James McCarthy. Very solid midfielder.

In danger of throwing the baby out with the bath water there Steve o - yes their teams have been shit for most of the season and they are all somewhat culpable for that but does that mean that are necessarily shit players ? Last season rvp carried us to 3rd place but does that mean that song, djouru, Wally etc are all wonderful top of the league quality players ? Does it fcuk and you know it - we finished 3rd in spite of them and not because of them and the same principle should/could be applied to players at those teams.
I will say it again just for clarification......I don't expect remy to be a star player but given our adversion to spending big on transfer fee's then 8m for him would be in our ballpark plus he would bring much needed pace to a front line and he has an eye for goal

Tiote is a brainless tool of doubt we are agreed

Re: Meagre Pickings
Jean Beausejour? Every time I watch this guy he does absolutely fuck all, pure pony. Maybe I'm missing something?
While I like Remy's game (although I doubt his ability to produce consistently) I wouldn't spend any money on the bloke because of his injury record.
I would take mignolet from sunderland over cesar.
I like McCarthy from Wigan but would still like to see the athletic, disciplined technically sound defensive midfielder that we've lacked since Wenger let them all leave in 2008(?) without replacing a single one.

Re: Meagre Pickings
A few months ago many on here were moaning that Newcastle seemingly had the French market to themselves and were able to sign all those fantastic players unopposed - well those players they signed have shown their quality as they currently lay one position above relegation! Pardew has also bemoaned the fact that some of them speak no English - surely he would have researched this beforehand? Also many on here over the years have cited Christopher Samba as an answer to our centre back problems but he really has been awful at QPR, bet nobody would want him anywhere near us now!
I'd like QPR's Remy but what's the point when we only ever play one up front?!

Re: Meagre Pickings
Don't know too much about him but I'm not sure Meagre would be a good signing!!

Re: Meagre Pickings
I love Sessegnon but he needs to be managed properly in order to be consistent, not sure if Wenger would get it out of him- would be an asset if he could but probably not worth the risk. The rest of our squad is shit apart from Johnson (who is still nowhere near good enough for Arsenal), Rose (who isn't ours) and Mignolet (who I think you'll end up bidding for).
From Newcastle you could probably do worse than get Ben Arfa, the rest of them are shit.
I wouldn't touch any of the QPR side if I was you, overpaid mercenary bottlers the lot of them. As for Wigan, I'm not convinced any of them could add anything to the Arsenal side, same with Norwich. If Villa went down Benteke would have been a good shout but they'll be safe now although to be fair I don't think any of the sides there or thereabouts really have a player of the sort of caliber to make a huge difference to Arsenak

Re: Meagre Pickings
Beausejour + Cisse
you have to be joking. Especially Beausejour, the man McLeish signed, barely PL standard.
Cesar and Remy maybe, but I'd be p*ssed if Remy was our no1 striker, in fact that would be a disgrace. Remy is probably no better than Cisse.
Honestly going through the Premier League bins is too much now. They've been taking the biscuit for 6 years now and its got to stop, otherwise they should just find something else to do with life.

And nobody here disagrees with you on that part - I have to admit that there is still a decent % of me clinging to the hope that we will return to the days of buying from the 2nd shelf of world footballers (barring the odd exception we never really shopped at top end of the market
