Golden Balls retires

Post by topgoon »

Beckham has announced his retirement from football.

Good career for a one trick pony. Great shirt seller.

You have to admire the way he has handled his career, he has not looked back since that petulant kick out and sending off.

Never my favourite player, always thought he was overrated but I admire the way he has made sure he was always at the right club at the right time. Gave me one of my 2 only goose-bump moments of watching the so called Golden generation.

That freekick against Greece in a game where he had been sh*te, shanked his other free kicks but cometh the moment cometh the Becks....the other one was Theo hattrick away to the Croats.

Good luck to him but as a footballer he was never as good as the acclaim he got.

Effectively retired when he went to USA to play. Gave up the opportunity for a few more years in a top league at any rate. Squeezed out a few more England caps on the basis of his fame and popularity but prioritised money etc over football after leaving Madrid.

Only started once for PSG in the league I believe in a game they drew, yet all the media say things like "Becks win Ligue 1" as if he was an integral part of that team.

Here's how much I care;

Played for Utd, Real Madrid, England, AC Milan, LA Galaxy, PSG. I have no interest in any of those teams whatsoever and therfore none in Beckham. Move along, nothing to see here.

A massive meh.

As Dan_85 rightly said, "move along, nothing to see here."

Give up then.

Beckham will barely feature on a list of best United players let alone making much impact on the annals of great footballers in the world.

An effective cog in one of Ferguson's machines with a top crossing technique but otherwise a fairly limited footballer - at least if we're comparing him to the greats. I quite liked him as a player because at least he worked hard but couldn't help but think the media and his PR team created an impression that he was a lot better then he actually was.

Maybe that's why people view him as overrated - because he got more trophies than the vast majority of players of the same ability, and this was largely due to right place, right time (as well as his own endeavour obviously).

There really is more to players than trophies too. Compare Fat Ronaldo and Wes Brown's trophies at club level.

He defo performed for England. Can't recall just how many times he got an assist. He should never have moved to LA though. What was he thinking?

As an England fan I worry about the next gen. If the last 'golden' gen is on its way out who is their to replace? Wilshere looks a crock. Cleveley is average. Can't really see anything positive about the England side atm. Too many average players.

Never underestimate the power of brand Beckham.

That name shifted shirts like you wouldn't believe.

But a Legend as a player would imply he was as talented as the likes of Zidane,Ronaldo(fat one and diving one),Messi,Henry,Bergkamp,Maldini,Pirlo,Seedorf,Kaka,Viera,Keane,(Before he became sh*t).

This list could actually go on and he still wouldn't get in.

Ask the average United fan if he gets into their ultimate United team and the answer would be a resounding NO.....odd that for a legend. :rubchin:

also beckham played in the galacticos, the biggest collection of stars ever seen, youd have to be a bit special surely to have been in that line up,not just to shift shirts in a team that would shift shirts by the bucket load without beckham

Again, you could argue this the other way. The Galacticos were a group of extremely famous players that didn't really deliver on the footballing side of things - hence not winning a trophy for 3 years and performing woefully in Europe despite la Liga not being the strongest league at that time. You can blame tactics, not gelling, instability etc but at the end of the day maybe the players just weren't anywhere near as good as their reputation?

He retired years ago and became the man that started this whole "footballers as celebrities" nonsense.

Fairly average footballer but a massive attention seeker. 30 years ago he would have been Tony Currie or Stan Bowles or Rodney Marsh - fairly average players that were desperate to be noticed off the field.

Sadly for them people didn't give a shit about celebrity culture then. Sadly for us people wallow in celebrity culture today.
