Re: The point of Spurs?
I have no problems with the writer putting down Spurs.
But to claim in the same article that his beloved Leeds are a big club with a global fanbase is hilarious, and then he talks all about the "rich traditions of the Revie era" without realising that Spurs are a bigger club than Leeds in the minds of most football fans.

Re: The point of Spurs?
Exactly Quartz - I take great delight in the glass ceiling dangling right above where Spurs are now and it also brings me comfort that Beer Cup aside we've still won plenty of trophies since their 1991 FA Cup win.
But the writer basically ignores the fact that Leeds have been pottering around in the second and third tier of English football for 9 whole seasons and don't look like returning any time soon - yet draws a significant distinction between Spurs getting edged out of CL places two years running. Outside of the glory years 1968-1974 Leeds have one won league title with no domestic cups. Far be it from me to talk up Spurs as a big club but fact is they've won a trophy every decade since the 1950s.
Not surprising that all Leeds fans have left to do is write WUM nonsense like that.

Read it and he just seems very bitter about the vermin, it's the kind of sh*te that vermin fans write on No Glory-No Glory.
Did enjoy the "stomping all over totteringham" line though.
Funny read but ultimately full of bitter bo***cks

Never mind Leeds being down for 9 or so seasons, I seem to recall them being down for most of the '80's? Or did I imagine that?

They went down in 1977 for one season only. When they went down they sold their keeper ..to us.Almunia is a clown wrote:Never mind Leeds being down for 9 or so seasons, I seem to recall them being down for most of the '80's? Or did I imagine that?

Re: The point of Spurs?
Reading it again he probably did, they went down in 1982 until 1990, came up and won he league within two years . One of the happiest moments of the 1980s was them going down. There were loads of Leeds fans in Ireland then.I Hate Hleb wrote:I think he meant Leeds.Bradywasking wrote:They went down in 1977 for one season only. i'd say leeds are a slightly bigger club.QuartzGooner wrote: without realising that Spurs are a bigger club than Leeds in the minds of most football fans.
leeds won the league in 68, 74 and '92. the spuds were in 50 & '61...
leeds have been in the European cup final and the semi's twice. Spuds have never made it past the 2nd knock out round.
both have won a few FA cups and european cup winners or UEFA cups, but neither has had consistent success ever, a bit like chelsea, city and Villa
Historically, the most successful clubs are united, scousers, The Arsenal and Everton. everyone else are pretenders or also rans.

I am no fan of either club, but Spurs are a bigger club in almost every sense.
Leeds might have won one more league than Spurs, but Spurs have done a double when it meant something and won a lot more trophies in total.
Not just trophies highlight a "big" club, but I bet Spurs are more well known worldwide simply through their more high profile players of late.
Spurs have silverware from 1901 onwards.
Leeds did not win a trophy of note until 1968.
Spurs have been relegated before, but have been a top flight team for 35 years.
They have been a yo-yo club through their history, but their spells in the second flight were much briefer than their spells in the top flight.
Leeds have been out of the top flight for nine seasons and have always been a yo-yo club through their history, with longer spells in the second flight than Spurs.
Spurs had a title winning team early fifties, a double winning team early sixties, and a cup winning team early eighties.
Leeds basically had a golden era late sixties to early seventies, and a revival with a league win in the early nineties.
Spurs - 17 Trophies
2 League Titles (inc. 1 Double)
8 FA Cups
4 League Cups
1 Cup Winners Cup
2 UEFA Cups
Leeds - 7 Trophies
3 League Titles
1 FA Cup
1 League Cup
2 UEFA Cups
Arsenal - 27 Trophies
13 League Titles (Inc. 3 Doubles, 1 Threepeat and 1 Invincibles season)
10 FA Cups
2 League Cups
1 UEFA Fairs Cup
1 Cup Winners Cup
Re: The point of Spurs?
leeds are a big club but they are not as big as they think they are, when I was growing up there was 5 big clubs or the big 5 as tv would call them
man u
Liverpool
arsenal
spu*s
everton
and up to 15 years ago or so arsenal were on a par with the totts and everton but below Liverpool and man u. these days we now have Chelsea and man city but in terms of world wide appeal we would still be third behind man u and Liverpool but way ahead of tottnum and everton, leeds don't even come into it anymore.

There is no way I would say that Leeds are bigger than Spurs.
As an Arsenal fan, I don't have a problem and never have had a problem admitting Spurs are a big club. As long as we acknowledge they will always be inferior to us and that we are far bigger, I don't see any need to pretend they are not one of the biggest clubs in England.
In fact it makes it funnier and more enjoyable that they have gone so long without a title if they are a big club. Because that is failure on a huge scale.
And who wants a small club as their rivals? For the rivalry to really mean something, I think your rivals have to be a decent size club and have a large following. Compare the Arsenal and Spurs rivalry to Chelsea's pitiful rivalry with Fulham or QPR.

Let's face it. If sp*rs were not sp*rs then we would have little to gloat about.
This is the reason for their existence.
