Arsenal Legend Bergkamp DVD

Post by StuartL »

Watched Wrighty's DVD last week, just put Bergkamp's one on.

Very telling that all the players talk about the lift it gave the club, the players themselves couldn't believe he was alongside them.

Amy Lawrence (journalist and ex gooner contributor) summed it up very well by saying " It felt like an absolute turning point in the history of the club, everything changed the second he arrived. The whole ambition of the club, the whole stature of the club, horizons were broadend the second that he signed "

That is what we need now, another Bergkamp moment - to give the fans, the players, the whole club a lift, to make them believe again that we can compete at the top end.

Oh and I never tire of hearing how Wright and Bergkamp met at a garage on the M25, nowhere near the training ground or anything just as Dennis was on his way back after signing for us :barscarf: :barscarf:

Goal of the month 1, 2 and 3 8) 8)

You'd have to explain who the fella is who signed Bergkamp to most of the flock at the Bowl. Really? You mean it wasn't our Lord and Master that signed the finest player ever to play for the club

That's a bit harsh SteveO...... quite a few of us who still go to the Grove know he was a Rioch signing. Its only the Wenger is god brigade who don't, you know the ones...... The ones who didn't know The Arsenal existed before inspector fucking clueless arrived! :barscarf:

Still remember where I was when I heard he'd signed for us. And that Bergkamp DVD is excellent too. :barscarf:

I was confused when we signed Platt.
I viewed him as a number 10 and wondered how he could play in the same team as Bergkamp.
But it worked out fine.

I was on a beach in turkey and guy in front of me was reading a day old daily mirror with me trying to read the bergkamp story on the back page, ran up to the shop to get a different paper as I didn't believe someone like him was now a gooner :barscarf:

what a signing that was.

It still maddens me when some c**ts try to argue that the goal against the geordies was scored from a mis-controlled first touch
He had skill like no other and I will always argue that he was the best foreign import to the premier league despite the c**ts who claim that cuntona or pre historic man (zola) is. Wenger has always disrespected the role of captain but I still remember the honour he felt as captain when he scored against the blue brummie c**ts and he wheeled away kissing the armband 8)

Watch the way Dennis turns after the initial touch - he meant that all day long. Genius, end of.

Once GG was sacked it was Dein who took over the transfers and got us Platt and Bergkamp that season. He also went on to be highly successful at bringing in players alongside Wenger until he was booted out. Dein should have his own Legend DVD. I do have to add that the Legend series are brilliant to watch and Henry, Wright and Bergkamp were a class above what we have now or had for some time apart from Van Persie who would have been amazing if we had a decent medical unit at the club.
Our worst ever moment was having to sell him, we just cant go out and buy another striker like that. They either dont exist or sign for City and Chelsea and do relatively crap for the amount of money they get paid.

This should be popular!! :D But "allegedly" it actually was Arsene that told Dein to go for DB at a world footy conference, as most clubs wouldn't touch DB after his time in Italy. GG had also inquired about DB before DB's ill-fated move to Italy I believe, but it was Dein signed him. Rioch likes to claim it, but he had fuck all to do with it is my understanding.

The day we signed him was one of my happiest as a Gooner. I remember my old man phoned me as I arrived home from work. He said, "We signed Dennis Bergkamp today. Deal done."

I dropped the phone, put on the news, saw it, and then ran around the back garden screaming and yelling! I just could not believe we had signed a true world class player. And that goal against the Toon? The greatest goal ever scored. Forget 30 yard volleys - they are all hit and hope. What he did with that goal was to demonstrate vision, poise, skill, technique, balls, genius and touch at a level few players ever achieve. 8)

Bergkamp - genius, legend, God. 8)

Have heard before that Wenger advised Dein to get DB10, but never seen it actually credited anywhere with a credible source.

For my part back in the day of teletext ( I was a 3 times a day man back then) that was how I got conformation we had signed him and spent the next 5 mins punching the air, whooping around my lounge and saying " fuck me, we've signed Bergkamp" 8) 8)

As for the goal, he clearly intended to do it as he was turned the instant he directed the ball - you couldn't react like that if it was unintentional, he was lucky only in as much as it came off to perfection with the perfect amount of spin and arc on the ball

I heard that Dein approached Rioch and said: "We can get Bergkamp. Do you want him?" To which Rioch obviously said yes. Now it wouldn't take much to imagine that same scenario but with Wenger in charge at the time, him being told the cost of DB, and then saying: "I like him but will not pay over £5m!!" and us missing out on signing of one of our greatest ever players. :worried: :worried:

Still, at least we could have had the - admittedly small - consolation that he would have been added to Wenger's increasinging long list of great players that 'we were interested in and almost signed'! :banghead: :banghead:

I have read (apologies for not being able to provide a link) that the board asked Rioch to provide them with a list of transfer targets when he took over.

Rioch gave the board a list of over 40 names, basically all the top players in the world.

This did not go down well with the board who thought that anyone could do that, and wanted a short focussed realistic list.
