I think you're mixing up the job of the anchor with that of the pundits.

Wossy is the celebrity face of the show - he anchors it, giving scripted critiques of films in a pre-recorded setting. It's not even an in-depth analysis, and more a general overview of a movie read out to the camera.

I'm not even convinced much of the knowledgeable content that comes from his mouth is his either, because that encyclopedic knowledge that seems to have been passed down from Barry Norman (and shared by all other celebrity film critics ) seems to evaporate on live tv.

MOTD is anchored by Gary Lineker, who - like Wossy - is obviously sticking mainly to a script. That part of the show isn't really the issue.... it's the pundits!

And even though Lawro, Shearer and co. aren't great at it, I think Gary Neville has shown how it should be done and there must be more ex-players, ex-managers and coaches out there who can do the same.

Even bright football journalists can offer a fresh prospective.

I think you are wrong about Johnathan Ross, g88ner. I think he does write his own review material as films are his passion and I know he has been a big film buff from an early age.
