Sagna

Post by supergeorgegraham »

He had a poor season last year but just like Ramsey he has played great this year. He is in the final year of his contract and I have no idea if he is leaving at the end of the season or if we will offer him a new contract. Big mistakes have been made on Wengers over 30 rule but IMO he has shown his class this season so far and I would offer him a nice 3 year deal as he will still be good at 33.

He's certainly been far better so far this season than he was last season because last season he was appalling. But he's not back to his pre-broken legs best (when he was the best RB in the PL IMHO) and I'm not sure he will ever get back there at this stage....

I would also say that if we are going to persist with playing this 4-5-1 shite with Giroud as the 1 then we need better crossers of the ball than both Sagna and Gibbs. Especially Gibbs - the worst crosser of a ball in the history of football. :|

Whilst I agree that Sagna is definitely playing alot better than last season, Swansea's goal, last Saturday was his fault, he gave up on the runner coming through and just stopped (looked like he couldn't be arsed), if he's not going to sign a new contract, get rid and get a decent right back in January!

A player in the final year of his contract? Didn't Wenger and Gazidis promise to "never let that happen again" after Nasri? :rubchin:

He is playing better this season (so far anyway) mind you he was pretty woeful last season. I don't doubt his ability, but whereas he used to take on defenders and beat them to cross the ball, he still seems to lack the confidence and self-belief he once had and stillhas yet to regain the form he had...and as DB says whether he will or not remians to be seen.
I get the feeling (ooh missus  ) that AW will offer hima 1 year deal and if not let him go, as AW thinks (rightly or wrongly) very highly of Jenko. :rubchin: :?

He is also (on form) the third best CB we have at the club. Maybe Vermaelen can get back so some sort of level but I'd much rather see Sagna there if something were to happen to either Kos or the BFG. I'd be more than happy to see him given a 2 year deal but as it's all gone quiet on that front I reckon he's off to France for one last pay day. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at PSG next season.

Spot on there rodders... it would be a shame to see him go though. :(

I take it you missed Swansea's goal last Saturday.

So the guy has one bad season against the 6 he's been very good in and people still want to get rid of him? :? And even then the one below par year was as much down to extenuating circumstances as anything else. The fact that - as already mentioned - he is also amongst our best centre-backs makes the call for him to be replaced even crazier!!

As for people automatically blaming him for the Swansea goal, don't they realise that part of a full back's job to get the opposition wide man to go to his unfavourable side. Therefore Sagna forced Davies inside, as opposed to outside generally preferred by the Swansea player, and the mistake came from the 3 players we had near the edge of the box NOT closing him down/putting in a tackle BEFORE he dropped the ball off to Boney. From there onwards Sagna does have to take the blame for NOT tracking the run of Davies. Even then Pers might probably have done a bit better when the ball was knocked back in.

One thing is for certain, I'm not sure Sagna is a player that one could accurately accuse of 'not giving a shit' or that he 'couldn't be arsed' when it comes to effort and performance over a long period. Anyone that thinks Jenkinson is anywhere near the same level at the moment as Sagna when it comes to defending, or that the guy could easily replace our most consistent defender over the past 6 years is nothing short of potty!!

Sagna seems to have lost a bit of pace, a bit of stamina and a bit of confidence, but he still puts in a shift, is brave and would be difficult to replace. He's got to be worth a two or three year contract.

exactly, 5 / 6 seasons he has been excellent, frequently our best defender. People would conveniently forget Jenkinson's mistakes to angle for him to be 1st choice. He made a mistake at Swansea, although it's not entirely down to him.

Can't cross and despite improvements still not at his best but regardless he's the best right-back at the club comfortably imo and in any event is easily good enough for the squad still, particularly considering how well he's deputised at CB.

Worth offering a two year deal.

As others have said he is not what he was at right back, but he is not bad at centre back.

In the absence of any major centre back signing, and with Vermaelen's form and fitness unsure, and with Jenkinson still learning the game, it would be rash to let Sagna go before a replacement is signed.
