Previous Arsenal v Southampton matches (Highbury / Emirates

Post by StuartL »

Should have a few good recollections as the saints seem to be a team that we enjoy playing at home against - Bergkamps first 2 Arsenal goals, A 6-0 when Pires and Pennant both got hat tricks and my personal favourite ......

Last day of the old North Bank, as the terracing was due to be knocked down to be replaced with a two tier stand as a result of the Taylor report. We had enjoyed a cracking end to the season with goals flying in from Wright, Limpar, etc and Wright needed to outscore jug eared Lineker to finish as golden boot winner.

A fairly mundane match burst into life in the second half, with goals going in aplenty but the real drama came in the last 2 mins, Seaman caught a hopeful goal attempt that was drifting well wide and threw the ball out to Wrighty, who bizarrely had come back into his own half, he ran, and ran, brushed off Terry Hurlock, and ran and ran some more until he was into the box where he buried a shot which put us 5-1 up, which added to his earlier penalty putting him level with Lineker who had scored as the spuds lost at Old Trafford.

Wrighty wasn't finished though as we poured forward again in the the dying moments and the ball fell to Wright in the box it bounced off his shin as he swung and sent the keeper the wrong way meaning he ended up top scorer :barscarf:

He was deliriously happy and at the end of the game threw his boots into the crowd, who at the North Bank end stayed for at least half an hour after the final whistle, to pay their respects to the old girl before she was bulldozed :(

Drawing 2-2 with them in the late 80s with Smudger burying a 97th minute header was fun too !

Can't remember if that was the same day that Davis landed a left hook on Cockerill

These threads are quite a good idea I reckon! That said only Southampton home game I can remember going to was a gritty 2-0 in the Invincibles season where we played shit, Henry scored a goal that was yards offside and then the second in injury time and they should have had a pen.

I don't think it was that match that Davis clocked cockerill, the 2-2 match was in the title winning season, i think Davis was sent of in the 1-1 draw at the dell the season before but the memory is a bit cloudy so I may be mistaken

4-0 late 1990 ..the first game after the two points were docked. Lifted the club big time.

Davis done Cockrill at Highbury but wasn't sent off, he was done on TV evidence. That was 1988 and was the title winning season. I'm sure that ended 2-2 with a very late Smudger goal..

for me, it has to be Dennis' game.

He had two good chances in the first half, and we'd all read Sugar saying "Bergkamp will do nothing at Arsenal" in the papers, the Mirror was already calling him a flop after six games, and then the ball dropped to him right in front of us on The Clock End and time seemed to stand still but i was in the air before it hit the back of the net.

the second goal was just a taste of the pure class to come, he curled it from outside the box with the outside of his right foot right into the top corner into the post. keeper was on his line but never stood a chance.

the roar of that first goal was probably as big as Big Tones ' that sums it all up' or TH14's goal against United, imho.

Apologies for clearly tempting fate here, but I can't remember seeing a home defeat to the Saints ; any idea when the last one was?

I think most of these fixtures are fairly unremarkable, but I do recall a frustrating 1-1 in November of one of the title seasons, either 98 or 02, when David Howells scored a late eqauliser for them.

I remember an end-of-season midweek game against them in the 1989-90 season when we went 1 down and then came back to win 2-1 with Lee Dixon, I think getting the winner from the penalty spot. I remember it being my first evening game and the first time I had seen us get and score and penalty.

We lost 1 - 0 in 1987, Danny Wallace scored at the North Bank with about 15 minutes to go. We had won the previous 10 games on the trot i think.

the season before we lost 4-2 at the dell davis did score but it was known for shearer getting a hat trick on his debut
th 1-1 draw at the dell was in 90/91 when smudger scored
