The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
List them! I'm not talking bad results, losing games we should win by the odd goal or two, i'm talking total embarassments that the players & manager(s) should be ashamed of, where we've been totally outplayed. I'm really struggling to think of any further back than the last few years. Maybe the memories have faded with time...
- Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal, yesterday. Totally pathetic, clueless performance from all on the pitch and the manager in the dugout.
- Utd 8-2 Arsenal. See above, although manager more to blame for this one. A large group of players who clearly weren't good enough for Arsenal sent as lambs to the slaughter on worldwide TV after yet another summer transfer shambles from AW.
- AC Milan 4-0 Arsenal. Chasing shadows the entire game, totally clueless again. AW blames poor turf down the flanks of the pitch.
- Birmingham City 2-1 Arsenal, CC Final 2011. An almost first choice Arsenal XI look like rabbits in the headlights against a team that would be relegated. We gift them the winning goal in the comical fashion that only modern day Arsenal can muster.
I debated putting the two recent CL exits to Barca in here although they were the best team in the world with some of the best players in the world so I don't think any of us really expected any other outcome. In both away legs we did actually manage to score and despite not having a single attempt on or off goal in the 2011 away match, we were hanging in there with a chance until RvP got sent off....
Same with the Newcastle 4-4. Second half was a catastrophic implosion but we were slicing them to bits for fun in the first half.

Re: The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
yesterday for me was worse than the 8-2
there were a few mitigating circumstances for that match and actually when you look back to it we didn't play too badly until the last half hour of that game.
yesterday was just embarrassing. I don't think I have ever been as shell shocked watching a game like I was yesterday.
for me yesterday was the worst performance ever under Wenger. there was no hope after 20 minutes and we are supposed to be the league leaders!

Away at Ipswich in the Carling Cup semi first leg - totally outplayed, pathetic display, no goalworthy attempts from us and concede a soft winner from a long ball to a Championship club.
To compound it Cesc / Arsene complained about their goal being a "rugby" goal ie long kick up the pitch.

Re: The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
Going back a very long way but loosing to Sunderland in the FA cup semi in 1973 was awful- they were a 2nd Division (Championship) team who hadnt done much for many many years, we had of course won the double in 71, and lost the FA cup final in 72, so were surely going to win, but we lost 2-1, if it hadnt been for Bob Wilson it could have been more.
Was a time when we hadnt won much for years before 71, the FA Cup meant so much more and we had been finalists for the 2 years preceeding.
I remember being terribly upset I dont think I ate for days afterwards

I remember this one. Trekked up there in the pissing rain and we were fucking abysmal.StuartL wrote:Away at Ipswich in the Carling Cup semi first leg - totally outplayed, pathetic display, no goalworthy attempts from us and concede a soft winner from a long ball to a Championship club.

The 6-1 defeat against Man Utd in 2001 was awful. Similar situation to yesterday actually, we had a shout of the league title but pretty much destroyed that in the first half being 5-1 down. Completely fell apart with a nightmare partnership of Grimandi and Stepanovs at centre back. Absolutely gutless.
Been a few over the years, remember being completely outraged last season when we lost 2-0 to Swansea at home after being completely outplayed and dropping to 10th in the league. The Blackburn and Bradford exits in the cups were horrendous and unacceptable as well.
Going back a few years but being dumped out the FA Cup at home to Milwall by two goals to nil in one of Grahams last games was one of the worst performances I have ever seen from us...horrible.

Some from my memory include:
Losing at Luton 3 0 in a 2nd replay in 1986.
Followed that up by losing to Watford twice in two days later in the season without looking like scoring.
Home semi final against United in the League Cup in 1983.
2005 Cup Final against United.

The home leg of the 2009 CL semi-final vs. Man Utd.
Thought we'd done really well to hold them to 1-0 up at OT, and then capitulated and lost the tie within the first 11 minutes. We didn't even compete, and the last 80 minutes was a total waste of time.
It was that, followed up by a 1-4 home loss to Chelsea the following weekend, that made me realise AW shouldn't be manager anymore.

Two Spurs games come to mind, 4-4 in 2008 and then the 2-3 in November 2010
Re: The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
In my mind, losing heavily to the likes of citeeh, manure, victims etc hurts and embarrasses more but defeats against the likes of Bradford, Blackburn, Norwich, hull etc are more pathetic
Losing games against teams that we should beat comfortably is bad enough, but when we lose because of a lethargic, cant be arsed to try display then that is truly pathetic and a disgrace to the shirt they are wearing

Re: The most pathetic Arsenal performances...
All the obvious ones have been listed - 8-2 United, 4-0 Milan, yesterday, 4-4 Newcastle, Bradford etc.
Not particularly remarkable games but I'm struggling to think of us playing much worse than last season when we followed up 1-0 defeat at Norwich with a 2-0 defeat at home to Schalke. We were comprehensively beaten twice in 4 days by distinctly average teams and I don't think we got near scoring in either game. Although we were hardly unaccustomed to defensive calamity I have never seen us look so clueless with the ball at our feet.
-------------------
On a similar note in terms of games that sum up the last few years I would plump for the 4-4 at Anfield. The talent has been there (although not enough of it) but the organisation, the tactics and ultimately the fight and leadership hasn't. 3 times we led and every time they pegged us back within minutes - despite taking the lead in the last minute we were very lucky not to end up losing.
Although the 4-4 at Newcastle was an utter calamity where everything that could possibly go wrong in the second half did, I'll never forget how the goals were going in and we were just trudging back to the centre-circle looking dejected. Not one person tried to lift us and the lack of leadership has been a recurring and damaging theme.
Special mention also has to go to managing to throw away 3 2-goal leads against Spurs in a short period of time. 2008/09 was the worst of the lot for me, we completely and utterly crumbled. The 2010/11 home game was also dreadful, we were cruising at half time and then forgot how to play football second half. By the time we went there in the return game it was completely predictable when our 3-1 lead had vanished halfway through the second half.

Sheffield United away lost 1 nil they were down to 10 men as there goalie got sent of put a outfield player in goal and we had a total of no shots on target
